Unusual Jaw and Tooth Wear
I killed an old whitetail doe a few days ago with a muzzleloader. The attached pictures show her jawbone. I think the teeth are the most worn I've ever seen. There are some spaces with corn kernels impacted right into the jawbone. I can't imagine how painful and annoying that would be. I think I might actually spend the money to get her aged. Has anyone had any experience with Matson's or Deerage.com?

Looks pretty old to me. I have sent many teeth out to deerage. It's a fairly painless experience, you won't regret it.

She must have been a smoker

Re: Unusual Jaw and Tooth Wear
I have been able to see several jaw bones like yours pictured
Many time gum/teeth disease can cause issues similar to your picture
I have also seen jawbones from deer with known healed pass injuries that defected the teeth and jawbones
The wear she has in her dentine is unreal
I bet eating wasn't very comfortable
Curious of the results if you send it off

Re: Unusual Jaw and Tooth Wear
Grizzlyadam: Thanks for the tip
Despite the teeth, she certainly wasn't starving. She might've had the most fat of any deer I've killed. I picked her out of a group of about 10 because she was far and away the biggest. For reference, my 7 year old daughter in the picture is 4'8". This was the first time she got to see a deer killed, and it was also the first time she made it through a sit without spooking any deer.

That’s gnarly. I have seen that much wear but not that much damage to the jawbone. Looks awful.

Either real old or diseased. I'm curious as to what you find out also.

I put on my private investigator hat and have concluded that she has been eating……………corn! Or Razor blades mixed in with corn!

Re: Unusual Jaw and Tooth Wear
How common is this?
I killed an old doe with muzzleloader this fall and it has similar teeth. What causes it? She was fat and had fawns, so still healthy and pretty enough for the bucks.
Here is a short video showing the weird jaw from my old doe:

Re: Unusual Jaw and Tooth Wear
I found an interesting article with pictures about abnormal deer jaws here: https://www.deerassociation.com/bad-tee ... ollection/
I sent the author an email, and to my surprise he replied within minutes. He said that he'd seen one similar jaw that ended up being aged at 14-16 years. I'm sending the incisors to Deerage.com, so I should be able to give you guys an update in 90 days or so.

Re: Unusual Jaw and Tooth Wear
I have seen that much wear but never that much damage on both sides. I have seen that much damage on one side with a couple. Old doe for sure. Will be neat to see how old
Some do. Some don't. I just might...

Re: Unusual Jaw and Tooth Wear
I’ve sent in over a hundred sets to DeerAge.com. You need the front two teeth and make sure you get the roots! They have a video on how to extract them.
