Patience pays off

Unread postby austin1990 » Wed Oct 20, 2021 3:13 am

Alright this hunt starts in July, when I found out I drew an archery only permit for a trophy area here in the state. It's also an earn a buck area, so from july til oct 3rd I spent every other weekend down there for a day, scouting and hangin cams, trying to get as many doe's found as I could so I could tag one and then go after a buck.

Day before the opener I found a red oak that was dropping and deer were hammering it, decided that would be my opening evening spot. Opening morning there was a bunch of raining coming, not supposed to hit til 9 am, and I had some doe's on cam hitting a pond between 7 and 8 usually so that's where I went. Well 7:45 the bottom fell out, It rained so hard you couldnt see 40 yards, at 8:15 I was soaked and packed up and headed for the truck and dry clothes. 8:25 them doe's showed up  Got changed in some dry clothes and waiting for the rain to quit. It finally did about 11 am and I slipped in to that oak tree. Between then and dark I had 5 different doe's come by, between 23 and 40 yards and I never could get a shot through the bois d'arc limbs.

That was October 3rd, between then and the 16th I managed to sit 11 times, without a single deer sighting. Finally on the 16th I struck out in the morning, and checked some cams mid day, and had one camera there was several doe's hitting, between noon and dark, and had 6 of the last 7 days, so I slipped in. Couldnt find a tree that'd work so I tucked up under a cedar that offered 3 shooting lanes. Finally at 5:30 pm I saw a doe 30 yards and closing, she hit the first gap at 26 yards and I drew, she hit the second gap and I shot, she mule kicked, ran hard for 50 yards or so and then I lost her in the grass/goldenrod. Waited 10 minutes or so and checked the arrow, straight guts  well i talked to a few buddies and a dog tracker and we decided to wait til midnight and go back and start trailing her. The dog tracker told me if I wasnt finding much or thought she was alive to call him. Went and sat around the campfire and replayed the shot over in my head. Finally midnight came and we went in to start the search, found blood immediately and tracked her to where I'd lost sight of her and we lost the blood trail for a few minutes, made a few circles and found it again, went 15 yards and there she laid, dead and stiff after 7 hours! Shot was straight guts, just in front of the rear ham but must of got an artery. By time we got her field dressed and drug out it was 2:30 am, got back to camp at 3:30 and he slept til 5:00 and got up and went hunting, I got up at 6:00 and broke down camp and took her to get checked in. Lots of patience had to be used for this doe, but now I'm buck hunting 8-)
