Canoe moose hunt 2021.

Unread postby Exophysical » Sun Oct 10, 2021 4:42 am

Headed out last week and managed to get my buddy his first moose! I usually get a bit wordy describing these hunts, but on this one there really isnt a whole lot I can say... 5 hour paddle in, called in a bull within 15 minuets on the first morning, 6 hour paddle out. Quite a contrast to last year where we hunted hard for 9 days just to get a cow elk, or the year before where he drove all the way to the Yukon and in 10 days never even saw a bull moose... some days things just go your way!

Yeah, for this type of thing the old Coleman doesnt quite cut it. This year we used my partner's canoe as it is bigger than mine and affords a bit more leg room once theres a moose in it. That said, its an ultralight Kevlar boat, and I was pretty nervous once we had it loaded for the trip out... a canoe hits a rock with lots of momentum once theres 1000lb of meat and gear in it... mine is Royalex and will take it, I dont think it would have taken a very big mistake to knock a hole in the Kevlar canoe.

That said, the light weight was a godsend when the moose was down, as it was neccessary to portage the canoe around a 1/2 mile rapid to recover the moose.
