Opening Weekend Buck
Anyone who knows me understands I’m not big on early season buck hunting. At least in my own woods. However, this makes 2 years in a row that I have traveled and had opportunity at good bucks early season. So now I like to travel early season and mess up other folks woods while keeping mine virgin til the rut Got another adventure planned towards the end of this month.
Wish I had some amazing story to share about how I outsmarted the buck I killed. But that simply wasn’t the case. When I travel to woods I don’t know I keep things very basic and simple. I determine where I believe they are bedding and where I believe they are feeding. Then I set up ambush in between. Through trial and error as days go by I usually find a pretty sweet spot to poke one. This trip was just that. Basically what I call “dummy hunting” based off what you witnessed in the stand you make adjustments until you find what you are looking for. I put in my share of hours in the woods the past few days and just needed a lucky break. Well Monday morning I got it! Now the shot was only 7 yards from a very low stand. I would imagine most think any idiot can make that shot. And they should! However if one has never experienced a good buck within spitting distance from low elevation they might find out that shot is harder than they thought. Emotions run high, and you got to pull back and drop the hammer with him right in your face.
My shot was good and I could tell he was hurting from the jump. I snuck out and gave him an hour. When I went back to the crime scene to look for my arrow. I looked up and saw him piled up 50 yards away. I just ran straight to him and didn’t even pay attention to any blood on the ground. Was a double lung complete pass through.
Was shooting a standard 2 blade cut on contact broadhead. Complete arrow weight of 525 gr thats front loaded pretty decent. First time I killed a deer with this particular set up. But after skinning it appears it ate his lunch.
For those into numbers the buck scored a 200gr sleeping pill right behind the shoulder. I’m just not a measuring kinda guy. If a buck gets my heart going he’s good enough for me no matter what the tape measure reads. This buck is no different and I couldn’t be any happier. Now…. On to the next one!

Man, sweet buck! I love "dummy hunting" and in-season adjustments. That's a big part of the sauce in my opinion. Congrats again man, and stick and string to boot, you really are the Boogieman!

Re: Opening Weekend Buck
Congrats Boogie on a nice buck.
You had a tough season last year so I know how good this feels. Great job staying with it and being determined to get it done.
