God bless October cold fronts!

Unread postby hokiehunter373 » Tue Oct 20, 2020 2:27 am

Cold front came through Friday and I got out Saturday. Decided to go to a new spot on a little piece of private that I've hunted for 2 decades but have had terrible luck. I’d seen a ton of intersecting trails through this spot and knew does were frequenting every day. It’s between a big green field and standing corn. Had a deer come in on me while I was setting up, saw several in the next couple hours, and then heard a loud deep cough around 5:35. Knew it was a deer and figured it was a buck. Kept looking that way, towards the corn, but it’s so thick in there I couldn’t see anything. Thought I heard branches shaking like a deer was pulling leaves off, then thought I could hear acorns being crunched. Finally I peeked around a tree in front of me and saw a buck I had on camera raking a tree in a big ditch. Just going to town. I grunted at him when he stopped and he looked my way before going back to thrashing the tree. When he stopped again I gave him one more grunt. He stared my way then turned and started coming. Was gonna be a good ol drop shot out of the saddle of course so I got my bow and got myself turned around as he took his time moseying in. Felt like he took forever, slowly walking, looking ahead, browsing some more. At the same time I had deer come in from the other direction, and I think that really helped with him continuing along. He finally went behind a big tree and I drew. He stepped perfectly into my clearing at 15 yards, slightly quartering away, and I let her rip. Double lunged him and got to watch him crash about 60 yards away. My first archery deer from the saddle. An 8 with no brows. 168# dressed although I really question that he's not heavier. 18” behind the ears. I’m pumped.

I'm reason they call it hunting and not shooting.
