WI Opener Drop Tine Buck

Unread postby Sam Ubl » Wed Sep 23, 2020 4:31 am

One of the most rewarding hunts for me. I first laid eyes on him in 2015 on trail cam. He was a ghost in 2016 and 2017, but returned in 2018 and in 2019 I hit him low in the shoulder after a deflection from a hanging limb (on film). Last year he was a main frame 8, but this year he grew into a 3 x 4 with double drops; one about 5-inches long, the other an inch. I watched him all summer long from a safe distance. I snuck in one rainy afternoon and slipped a camera in a tree back in July. I was off to North Dakota to test myself in different terrain than anything I'm used to only to return with a day to go before the Wisconsin opener. The wind was perfect for an area I had observed the buck throughout the summer. He was on a pattern of every fourth day when he would show, a pattern I'd noticed for the second half of August through the days leading up to opening day and as luck would have it, September 12th was the fourth day since his last visit. My close friend and cameraman for the evening sat through the wind and storms that saturated us most of the afternoon until it cleared with just enough time for the deer to get on their feet, shake off and make their way on their feeding route for the evening. Well, he showed up and this is how it went down:

Thank you, guys. I was certainly humbled by the shot. 38-yards walking without stopping him showed just how big of a difference one step can make without a lead. I aimed for lung and when I settled and squeezed he had already taken his next step. I certainly appreciate luck when it’s on my side and that evening luck had him tip over within single digit seconds of the shot even though it was back. That artery exploded and he was a dead deer running. It could have gone wrong in a hurry, so I’m incredibly thankful of the turnout.

Hindsight is always 20/20, but today I think I’d have taken the same shot without stopping him. I’d have aimed a bit ahead based on the distance of the shot. We were covered in deer at close range (15-yrds). I truly believe if I’d have mouth grunted to stop him the game would have been over and they’d have busted taking him with. As with all things hunting, you have to make decisions on the fly and no matter the years of experience sometimes you don’t always plan “ahead.”

At the end of the night he was hanging and that’s all that really matters, but it is worth the lesson to be shared. A walking shot at 38 is far different than a walking shot at 18.

Awesome footage! This is really well done! I can’t believe all the bucks you are seeing! I am lucky to see just one doe on the public places I hunt in Minnesota.
