A weekend in Ohio beast style, big 9 hits the dirt

Unread postby Birddog00 » Sat Jul 18, 2020 12:08 pm

Hey guys, I have been off of the forum for a while now, mostly checking current information on the facebook beast pages. I'm hopeing to limit my time on Facebook with all the craziness going on.
I thought I would share one of my deer from last year (2019). I was able to fill both of my michigan buck tags on some northern Michigan public land in the same weekend, the first weekend in October. So after sitting with some friends and doing a little duck hunting I was ready to get back in the stand. So on a wim I decided to buy a Ohio tag and take my family fo a hotel, and head off to a piece of public I had picked out just by e scouting on Onx.
I belive it was the weekend of Oct 18 and I arrived late on a friday. I wanted to get eyes on a tree I could potentially set up in the next morning so I grabbed my bow and with 1 hour left of daylight I made it about 3/4 of a mile in. I turned a corner of the trail and there was a 1.5yr old 6pt eating acorns on the same trail about 100yrds away. I hit the dirt and threw my binos up. While watching the 6pt a really nice buck stepped out in between me and the 6pt. Looked to be about a 140ish 8point. Needless to say I was excited.
The next morning I made it out to a tree in the same area I seen the large buck making scrapes, about 1.5 hrs before light. I made it in the stand shortly after and waited for daylight. Just as it was getting good shooting light, I could hear a buck on the scrapes behind the stand, blocked by a red oak. He ended up making his way directly under the stand, and as his head and rack cleared a branch I could tell he was catching my scent, with absolutely no wind I knew it was over. He ran back the way he came from, and I thought that was my chance. About 20min later a really nice 9pt did the exact same thing, only he made it another step before turning around and walking into a sea of CRP. I could watch his rack and I seen where he had ducked into some taller brush, he had only caught a small amount of scent and didnt spook to bad.
In the afternoon I decided to get in close to where I seen the 9pt duck into the brush. I found the run he was on, also had seen two other smaller bucks in the morning on that same run, and I picked out the biggest tree within bow range. A 6in round poplar tree would have to work. I made it about 12ft and got set. I had a button buck come and smell where I dressed under the tree (it was about 70 degrees out) and he worked off. About 1 hour before dark I caught movement from some taller trees just off my down wind, and it was the nice 9pt. He had almost bedded exactly where I last seen him and I was not expecting that. He ended up walking the same run back towards where I had the encounter with him in the AM. I stopped him at 41yrds and my arrow flew true. After some very excited phone calls to my wife and friends, I had a great blood trail to follow. I thought I seen the buck crash but I wasn't 100 percent sure until I had my hands on him. He ended going 126 gross. And I couldnt ask for a better weekend in ohio!
