After I struggled to get any of the Tom’s I saw last Friday and Saturday to come in to my Jake and hen decoys since they were already with hens, I put together a crude cardboard fan for Sunday AM. This is my 2nd year turkey hunting and I struck out last year. I was hunting public land in SE WI. I had the area to myself all week but I heard another hunter in the parking lot hitting an owl call which then set the Toms off and I realized they were not roosting anywhere close to the previous days but were right on top of the other hunter and then I heard him calling and figured he pulled them away, but at 5:15 I heard them sounding off in the field 300 yards away and coming my way without their female companions. They worked slowly until they got to 150 yards and then they saw my strutting decoy with the cardboard fan and they came in quick. Dropped him at 37 yards @ 5:35am. I knew he was a double beard after watching him through my bino’s, I got excited and cut it off and later saw that he was in fact a triple beard. Pretty pumped for a triple beard for my first turkey ever, 9.5in beard and had 1.25in spurs. I don’t have a scale so I didn’t get around to weighing him but he had some heft to him!
