Beginner's Luck! (or skill)

Unread postby Net Guy » Thu May 07, 2020 11:45 pm

Took my 6-yrs old son out hunting with me for the first time ever yesterday. We weren't able to make it out in the morning because Cameron had a zoom call with his class in the morning, so we went out in the afternoon to do some running and gunning. The first spot we went to we flushed some hens off of some nests and bumped a jake. We saw a tom sneak into a woods in the second spot we went to so we decided to go after him. After walking 2+ miles in the first spot I was glad to hear the little guy was still willing to go.

We walked about 1/2 mile to get to the tom and turns out there was 2 in the very small woodlot we were in. They got hung up about 60yds away but we couldn't see them because we were in very thick brush. Cameron wanted to call so I gave him my box call and let him use it. He did the vast majority of the calling and they gobbled a ton to him! This was the first time he ever seen a box call let alone use it. I was super impressed. He did amazing and eventually, we called them in. Very memorable hunt to say the least. :D His make-shift camo worked pretty good because you can imagine how still a 6-yrs can stay without a blind.

Bird weighed 24lbs, 10" beard, 3/4" spurs.

Sweet!! Congrats. That’s a great story and I bet that calling experience got him hooked.

And I need some of those pants for the next time I go turkey hunting. :D

Thanks. Yeah, who needs all of those fancy camo patterns? I was chuckling pretty good when he got dressed and we were heading out but it actually blended in pretty decent. It worked though!
