This is the "BEST" day deer.

Unread postby milkweed-militia » Tue Dec 17, 2019 4:25 am

With season starting to get later and no bucks on the ground, it hit time to start trying to fill up the freezer. I've tried to get my son out a lot this year. He loved going scouting (or scout campin as he calls it) and fishing this summer, so I've tried to get him out with me in the stand this year when I could. I asked him if he wanted to go Saturday morning and I got the standard answer, "YES!!!".

The part of TN where I live has a very healthy doe population and we typically see deer every time we head out. Our property is is 11 acres of wide open hillside that's right beside the highway. So, you're either going to see deer at first or last light or not at all. When we walked out the door and started walking out, I saw tails flip up and start running out of the yard (not good). Then, right as we're getting to the stand, a few more doe start blowing and running off (really not good). It's about an hour before first light and I'm thinking that the first time where we're going to spook all the does off before light is the first hunt where we're wanting to kill one!

We got settled in and started to wait. As it broke daylight, I stood up to check behind us to see if anything was coming up the hill and I spotted the doe. I pointed Hudson to her direction and he responds, "I see her Daddy. Are you gonna shoot it?". I tell him yes and he immediately throws his hands over his ears. Since she was about 80 yards from being in my shot window, I told him that he could lower his hands for now and I'd let him know when I was going to shoot. Two big diesel trucks come barreling down the road and spook her up to about five yards before my window. I told little man to get ready. She made a few more steps and I took the shot. She turned and ran back down the hill into a shrubby bush line. When I looked down, Hudson was looking where she ran and his arms were both shaking up and down. He looked up at me saying, "We got it didn't we Daddy? We got it! THIS IS SO AMAZING!".

We went back to the house to get Mama and Lily for the track job. We started at first blood and tracked back down the hill. As we're tailing the blood, Hudson says, "I'm so excited that we're going to have more pasagna (lasagna to you and me)". We found her on the hillside and the kids helped me gut the deer. As we walked back up to the house to get the truck, Hudson told me at least three times, "Daddy, this is the best day!".

This was the first deer that I've shot with one of the children with me. It was one of the smallest deer that I've ever shot, but it was the funnest hunt I've ever had. 11 acres and a stand 100 yards from the house don't seem like much to a lot of us, but it was a back country adventure for my little guy. I'm thankful that I'm able to get them out and just deer hunt.

Love it. Some of my most memorable hunts are with my daughter and I have never shot a buck with her.

All around good story with lots of good memories.
I'm reason they call it hunting and not shooting.
