First MN Public Land Buck
Shot my first public land buck the evening of Nov. 2nd. I don’t post much so bear with me. I’ve been focusing on hunting public land more the last couple years so I could get out to hunt more having some pretty close to where I live. It was also very likely my grandpas land I grew up hunting would be sold once he passed, which sadly happened this summer.
Anyways I’ve been looking a lot at aerial photos to narrow down spots and scout my way in on spots I pick out. I ended up working my way in slowly looking for sign and found really fresh rubs , tracks and intersecting trails . I was planning to go in deeper from scouting I had done the week before but this spot just felt right.
I picked a tree with good back cover got 4 sticks high and settled in to my assault a little before 4. A little after 5 I was looking over my shoulder at a cat prowling through the woods when I looked back to my front the buck is walking in on the same trail I did and is already inside 40 yards coming straight at me.
I grab my bow quick he gets to 20 yards and hits some ground scent I left and stops with a couple trees between me and him. He contemplates his next move for what seemed like an eternity, then decides he’s gonna turn around and booger out the way he came.
I draw, stop him as he hits an opening quartering away, guess him at 30 yards from ranging spots earlier, settle the pin and send it.
Shot looked a little low and he crashes off.
Waited a bit then climbed down, found blood then called my brother to help track. We started tracking about 2 hours after the shot and found good blood but he had gone pretty far and one of our lights died so we backed out.
Picked up the trail the next morning and found him dead about 200 yards from where we stopped. Shot ended up being a little farther back than I wanted clipped some stomach/ intestines, liver, lung, and out the opposite arm pit.
He’s not quite as big as I initially though but I’m more than happy with him. Now I’ve got a week in South Dakota starting next Saturday to try fill that tag for round 2 out there.
Thanks to Dan and everyone on the forum I’ve learned a great deal from you, I don’t post much but I’m always on here trying to learn more and more.

Good job!
God gave us 2 ears and 1 mouth. That means we should listen twice as much as we talk.

Gorgeous buck. Congrats.
No Shortcuts. No Excuses. No Regrets.
Everybody's selling dreams. I'm too cheap to buy one.
