First bow buck
Yesterday afternoon I hunted a state forest for the first time. There was a high thermal hub, clear cut, and adjacent pinch point at the head of a draw. This area was really interesting to me and I had scouted it out over Labor Day weekend. It is 2 miles from the nearest public parking , so I thought it would not get much pressure. This was my fifth day hunting this season, likely my last day for the bow.
The spot I was interested in was on the southeast side of everything, but the problem was we had a south wind yesterday, at my access would leave me right upwind of the clear-cut before I reached my stand. I figured I would just walk fast and hope for the best, but a bulldozer and a truck happened to pass me right as I was accessing, which worked out perfectly. I'm sure they were laughing at me with my stand on my back and my bow in my hand two miles back, and probably thought it was strange when I started running using their cover noise and scent.
But it worked out perfectly.
I was on the shadow side of a tree, using it for cover, and watching in this direction.
A young six pointer came from left to right, and I had made up my mind that any deer was fair game. I need to get better at killing. Because I had been leaning against the tree with my bow tilted when I pulled back, my arrow was not in my arrow rest so I had a tense moment of trying to flick the arrow on to my rest while at full draw. The buck was moving away from me and I did not stop him.
The shot was hard quartering away, and he mule kicked. I got down before dark to see if I could find the arrow and I could not. When I walked to the spot I last saw him bound into the cover, I could see his white belly. He went maybe 45 yards. Because he was moving when I shot, the arrow entered farther the back then I would wish, but I kind of got lucky and it severed the great vessels in front of the spine.
How I found him.
I'm lucky he didn't run downhill too far, as I had a two-mile walk each way to drop off my stand and fetch the cart. I used my sit drag around my chest and shoulders like a sash, and used by tether to attach it to the handle of the cart, so I was hands-free. It was a pretty slick setup, and the distance did not seem bad. It was way worse going through water and muck at other properties, since this was a logging road. Too bad the workers locked the gate to the road behind them. It made for a late night with over eight miles walked total.
A sincere thanks to Dan and all of the beasts out there that have shared so much knowledge over the years. It has helped me a great deal.
