Not much cooler than early season capes!
Congrats Ryan!!
So cool to kill a targeted Buck early season! All the strategy and detail is what memories are made of!
I hope your having it mounted! One of my biggest regrets is not having my opening week buck taxi’d back in ‘13!
Those smoooooth looking capes are awesome!
Well Done Sir!!

Re: Opening day ground pound buck
Thanks for the kind words everyone!
The smooth cape is definitely cool! I actually decided to go with a European for this guy though. He’s a nice buck and I’m proud of him. Haven’t taped him yet, but I’m confident he won’t even make 130”, and I’m trying to only mount mature bucks.
An early season mounter is high on the list though, believe me.
This buck really made me realized that opening weekend might be the best time for me to kill a mature buck. I have complained a lot in the past that all the crops and extremely low pressure makes these bucks very hard to find. I just said in my journal post that opening weekend is my ticket for using the low pressure to my advantage... IF I can find a shooter on a pattern. If I can, I’ll be in great shape. During rut, who knows where they’ll be.
I’ve been putting forth a decent amount of effort the last few summers, but I’m about to make these August observations a major priority. I’m going to try and get my Dad involved more as well. It will be quality father/son time plus we’ll be covering twice as much ground.

Re: Opening day ground pound buck
Gotta agree. Even my old whitetail mentor always said how much better he thought opening week was. Granted he wasn't targeting mature bucks. But he liked how the deer were less on edge. From lack of pressure all summer. Sometimes you catch them still on their more visible summer pattern. He'd usually put a buck down in that first week.

Outstanding...neat to hear the stories of guys who pound it year round and how that raises your odds. Thanks LD
