Had some success yesterday. DIY public land, packed out 3 miles as the crow flies. Came into a waterhole and I seized the opportunity.

Today I'm rehydrating and letting my feet and back recover just doing some glassing for the other guys in my group.

***Story added

Our group's 3rd archery antelope trip. We ended up 3 for 4 on antelope. I had the first kill with a young buck. Jeff(Mark's dad) had the second kill with a really nice buck that he spot and stalked to 23 yards!!!! And ryan had the 3rd with a big old doe that he shot left handed with his right handed bow  Mark had 3 antelope dead to rights (one really big buck and then 2 does) but suffered 3 misses due to some bow issues.

While jeff probably had the best story, The story behind my kill is as follows:

Early this year I spend some hours studying aerial and topo maps. My number 1 spot I scouted out was a remote water hole that looked like it had all the right ingredients to be a killer spot. It was remote enough to have a lack of human pressure, it had good steep topography all around it making it possibly to hide well, it was small enough to create a concentrated ambush point.

Finally when we arrived for our first day of hunting, I made the 3 mile (as the crow flies) hike back to it. It looked as perfect in person as it did on a map.

I sat there for six hours and only saw one doe antelope wander by, but I knew from past experience that this was a killing spot. The amount of tracks by the water told me, and I remember someone saying "the sign don't lie". On my walk back I ran into a group of 11 bucks plus one other nice lone buck.

The next day I left camp at 445 am. As I got to the waterhole about an hour and 45 mins later, a real nice buck was already at the water. I watched him shortly and he bedded down right next to my hiding spot. I decided to bust him out of there and get settled in. The sun came up and it got really hot out. I stayed busy picking ants off me and trying to keep comfortable while sitting on the side of the hill.

Then a single big buck appeared in the distance and fed in the shade. As his shade disappeared he made his way to water. Then 8 more bucks showed up and all 9 bucks beelined for the water.

I was laying on my back with my bow on top of me. As they approached they stopped at about 125 yards and examined the place. I think they were standing there for minutes. I had an ant crawling some place the sun doesn't shine and I decided to make an adjustment. Finally one of then caught my movement and made an antelope snort. The group shuffled around for probably another 15 minutes. Most of them still didn't figure out where I was but they kept moving as a group and finally left. I was a bit bummed about that.

About 45 minutes later a small buck came into the water on my left out of range. I was considering getting up and putting a very doable stalk on but decided he was small and I would wait for the opportunity I had planned on.

As I was sitting up watching him through the binoculars, I shifted back around to hide myself again. Just as I did that i heard a snort from behind me and 4 antelope does began running off. They had snuck up behind me undetected. All was quite at the waterhole again and my confidence had taken a blow.

Then at about 1130 I saw 2 antelope right where the group of 8 had originated from earlier. I glassed them and saw that while they were both smaller, one was significantly bigger than the other. I then decided then and there that this waterhole hunting is tricky stuff and if given the opportunity at him I would gladly take it.

These 2 did the same routine, walked into 150 yards and stood there and examined for several minutes. This time I put my poker face on and remained motionless. I had an ant biting my right love handle. I could feel him digging in deeper every 5 seconds or so. I bet he got me a couple dozen times.

Finally a light switch flipped and these two bucks decided to go to water. I watched where they went to and once I heard the slurping I began to rise up. I knew based on where they were at that the waters edge was at 38.5 yards. The smaller one was drinking and my buck was standing back from waters edge several yards and looking up directly away from me so I drew and rose up the rest of the way. I had plenty of time to pick a spot and settle the pin. Arrow began flight just as the little one saw me. Shot felt great but the arrow landed a little lower than I expected. They both ran off and my buck bedded down after running about 100 yards. I flung another arrow when he stopped at about 80 yards but it hit the dirt below him. He was liver hit. I watched him for an hour and he did not move, but still had his head up, looking away from me.

I decided to try and sneak down and stalk him. Unexpectedly he looked my way as soon as I got up and ran off....Lucky for me he only ran another 80 yards and bedded. The next few hours were nervewracking. I stalked to 40yards and hit him in the foot as he was bedded and he ran off again. Finally at 4pm after another stalk I double lunged him at 25 yards and he ran a short ways and was done finally. Not the way you want it to go but I was very happy to recover him.

I quartered and deboned everything and made it back to camp by 8pm exhausted.

That was on monday and we planned to stay thru friday which we did so I went scouting and shed hunting tuesday thru friday. Had some cool finds:
