First mature whitetail deer
Just wanted to post some pics and tell the story of how i harvested my first mature whitetail.
It was thanksgiving morning 2004 , me my father and my uncles were hunting the same piece of public we/they have been hunting for decades. I was 17 years old at the time and this had been a tradition with my family along with opening days of bow/gun season. We had brung one of our friends along with us, Fred, who is not a hunter but loves the outdoors as much as we do , so it was pretty cool he got to experience this with us.
It was first thing in the morning and i am sitting there in my stand and all of a sudden i hear shooting up the hill about a hundred or so yards . On public land when you hear shooting close you sit tight because the deer are usually coming your way lol. All of a sudden i hear boooom, like 30 yards away or so, now im kinda worried because that was close. All of a sudden i just see rack running out in front of me about 30 yards. I pulled up my gun and aimed in an opening the buck was headed for, waited for him to run there and then shot him . He dropped right there in his tracks and didnt even twitch.
As soon as all the shooting was done i didnt even have a chance to call my dad on his walkie talkie and he was already calling me knowing i had shot something. My exact words to him were”dad i just shot a monster hurry up and get down here”.He was hunting about 10 minutes away from me on foot but made it there to me in 5. When we walked over to the buck i didnt know what to say. He was A monster! We started to get it field dressed and now here are these two different guys that had shot at this buck walking up to us. The one guy had about a 3”” piece of this bucks antler in his hand, which he had missed the deer completely except for hitting the antler. The other guy had hit this deer way back in the and was nowhere near a fatal shot. These guys came up saying they were looking for “their” deer they shot lol. My dad jumped all over them saying something like you hit it here and you hit it here, now my son hit it here and dropped it in its tracks. Mind you i shot this buck right behind the ear in the head on the run and dropped him in his tracks. They said yes your right we only wounded him you killed him congratulations and went on their way, i know they were butthurt .
Now my dad and uncles have been hunting this piece of public for 20 or so years and have never got one of this caliber before. Long story short , thankfully they all chipped in and had it mounted for me and here it is.

As a matter of fact no he never did give me the piece of antler back. I was so pumped i wasnt even thinking lol but it was only a small piece. The taxidermist filed the antler down and made it look nice anyways.good times!

Love the story and the way your old man set 'em straight.
