Followed the tracks
First Friday of PA rifle I was pretty far in, and jumped a couple of pretty good looking bucks on a hillside around 10:00. They took off about 150-200 yards away from me, so I sat a few minutes and then took up their tracks to follow them in the crunchy snow. Over the next 3 1/2 hours and 3/4 mile I slowly followed their trail, stopping every few steps to take a good look at the woods where they were heading. Eventually I saw movement ahead of me 100 yards or so, and crept a few yards farther before crouching down to stare through my binoculars for 10 minutes trying to actually see the deer right in front of me. They are amazingly hard to see sometimes if they’re not moving. Anyway, they mill around for a while and then kind of lazily run off over the side of the hill. I figured that they must have smelled me and I wouldn’t see them again so I walked up to where they started running. Followed the tracks about 25 yards more and noticed a buck right in front of me at 50 yards. I spent a couple minutes watching it behind some brush and decided that this opportunity was as good as it was going to get for the year. Shot him at 1:30 and I finally got him in the truck right around 5:00. Good sized deer, not sure what it weighed but it was heavy enough. Measures right at 120”. Looking forward to next year already!
