Tagged a public land brute I’ve been after.
Took a former marine veteran out for his first hunt on his birthday last Saturday morning, the 2nd weekend of rifle season on some private ground in St. Louis county. He wasn’t looking for anything specific, just wanted to tag his first deer. Unfortunately although the deer sign was as thick as can be, we didn’t see a deer, and got skunked.
Literally 2 skunks passed thru and that was it.
He headed out to the bars to celebrate, and I headed to some public ground 1.5 hrs north.
This is a nice public spot that gets overlooked due to its small size. I’ve put good time in at this spot in the past and have arrowed some does off of it. And have seen some nice bucks on cam I’ve been hoping to cross paths with.
Well it all worked out!
Decided to hunt downwind of a thick doe bedding draw, and it was the right move.
Got my stand and sticks hung and climbed up at 2:40 pm. Was getting situated and happened to catch a glance of a nice buck making a scrape in the thick brush 25 yards away.
A minute later he presented a shot opportunity, and the hand loaded .22 Nosler round did its job.
Quickest hunt I’ve ever had, never got to sit down. [img]

He looks good, but the pics are blurry to me for some reason. Congrats none the less!

It definitely pays to take your time, go slow and make as little to no noise as possible when setting up, and use the tree as a blocker between myself and the bedding cover. I've gotten pretty good at it over the years.
