2018 Archery wrap up

Unread postby thepennsylvanian » Thu Nov 15, 2018 6:30 am

Well, as with everything, this season did not go as planned. I was only able to find one "mature" buck this scouting season.Image
So I made a plan to hunt him on the opening evening. Well he came in, from down hit my trail, spooked a bit but stopped at 22 yards! I drew and released. Smack, he ducked and my arrow skimmed his back. I knew better he was alert, 1, and I got a little excited, 2. I should have held lower on the body, but I ran through the motions so quick I settled my pin squared up on him..... Needless to say he got away, I got a video of him working a rub two days later. I never went in there again.
So given this is my first true year hunting bedding, it has been one of the best years I've had in the woods to date, minus the early mess up.
I have only hunted 2 locations more then once, most sits have been blind sits, as I had never hunted most of the areas I went in this year. Only three times did I hunt and not see bucks, and I didn't sit a single day with out being on deer!
I took a small 8pt early in Pa and began to focus in WV.

I have learned alot this year, covered so much new ground, built on my technique. I took my first WV buck last Friday in the rain after canoeing in to a spot that had no other access. That was a blast, and even though I am not killing bruisers I have never had as much fun in the woods as I have this season!

Rifle season starts Monday, I'm going to keep using the tactics I've used for archery and hopefully it'll produce aore mature deer. But even if it doesn't I've had a great time this year! My first two buck year!
