A Long and Humbling Season...

Unread postby <DK> » Wed Nov 14, 2018 8:26 am

Welp, I finally got one! I didnt plan on doing a write up but I figured id release some frustration.

The season hardly ever goes as expected but it has been a greulling year. Probably my worst season since using bedding tactics and hopefully the last...

This off season was not as productive as im used to. Due to a tight schedule and no time this spring I got about 6 days out, which 4 of those days were on one property I wanted to pan out but due to sign I didnt even hunte it. I started the season w 20 days of vacation and I am down to 5. I quit keeping track but iv hunted roughly 25+ outings including weekends which equalled = x2 decent buck sightings. If I didnt have bad luck this year then I wouldnt have any at all.

After 3-4 hot seasons in a row I feel like this one really put me into check. There were some days I wasnt even enjoying myself and even times I questioned myself but its all part of the grind. I passed a shot at a pretty doe early which I regretted later. Blew 3 opportunities at some gobblers. Did not see antlers from the stand until late Oct which I blew a stalk on a 140s class buck. Got about 40 yards from him and he could sense my presence. After that I started seeing more and more bucks but I had almost zero good luck this year.

Finally - Friday Nov 9th (day before rifle) - The last hour it started to snow, which was the first time I had ever bowhunted in the snow this buck came by at 12 yards. I was extremely happy to notch this tag. Not usually a buck I start the season dreaming about but I may even full mount him idk yet. Hes a nice young buck and is a trophy to me. Would be a great reminder type of sentiment. I still have a rifle tag and a few more outings to go. Hopefully those come with good fortune.

Congrats. Hard work and persistance pays off.

If it makes you feel any better I just passed two years since I last tagged a buck with many hard knocks along the way. It’s all part of the journey. Don’t ever let it get you down. Good to hear you stuck with it and never gave up. 8-)

Congrats! I know the feeling very well and struggled myself this year. Just goes to show no matter how much you know or how hard you try bowhunting these critters is hard no matter what!
