First gun season bow kill

Unread postby Mossyhorns » Mon Nov 12, 2018 1:04 am

This hunt will be hard to beat for me. this was an overall hard working experience with two good friends and it paid off, and just a great memory. All three of us have been learning the beast style and are now definitely all in. we took off on a journey Saturday morning on a heck of a journey. Saturday was KYs Gun season opener (November 10-25 this year), and instead of going somewhere on private land and sitting in a box blind or ground blind over a corn pile like what seems 90% of people do around here we decided to go to a piece of public that is bow only and one that we had not hunted this year yet. Both of my buddies had their sticks and saddles and a bag of clothes and bows and I had my API Climber and backpack of clothes and bow and we set off. immediately out of truck is a huge steep mountain then over the top and then back down crossing a heavily running creek due to the rains we have had and then back up the other side to the next ridge that hide 5-6 big ridge points that dropped off to the end of the property. after going almost 2 miles already we were at the top of the next ridge on the backside of the public and we got our OnX maps out and decided where we were going to go. I went in and found 1 decent tree that was on the edge of a cedar thicket overlooking the bottom that three ridges dropped into. at 8 o'clock not seeing a deer yet I needed to stand up and draw my bow back and unthaw, I did that and then had to I looked down below me and seen a rock that was covered in moss, so I thought that would be a good target. as I am pissing, hitting a few leaves while trying to aim at the mossy rock, here my buck comes out of a holler, so I had to pinch it off. as he trotted in right at 45 yards and stopped to look at where the sound came from (pee hitting leaves) I grabbed my grunt call and hit it twice, he then came running right at me and at 12 yards he turned to his left and stopped to make a scrape after It looked as if he was done I drew back and held on him. as I let go it seemed something wasn't right and I hit a limb as what turned out I barely grazed the top of his back. It was windy yesterday and he must have just thought a limb fell out of the tree on him then now he just gradually trotted up the hill at 24 yards and I am trying to reach another arrow out of the quiver that was at the bottom of my platform. I got the arrow knocked right before he got to the trail that I walked in on and I drew back and stopped him with a mouth grunt call (meh) and my Magnus Stinger fixed blade met its mark double lunging him and he ran just out of sight 50 yards and sounded like a car crash. I texted the guys once I found service and they were having good mornings as well, and told them to not help me and ruin their hunt as I was just going to enjoy this and pull him out as far as I could by myself. what ensued was 6 hours of some hard pulling, I had no service until around 1:30 when I got a text that said they had a cart still on the property from last year and maybe I would get lucky and it still be there. and at around 2:15 I got a text and said they were coming to help me (thank goodness). was hard getting him out even with 3 of us and a cart half of the way on the last hill going down the wheel on the cart actually broke and we had to take him off the cart to finish, but the memories of that drag out I will never forget. Sorry for the long read but I didn't want to forget anything about this hunt as it is my biggest bow kill and my first rifle season and not using a gun. Thanks to all the Hunting beast members and threads for helping us learn where to go to be in the game. It is good to have some buddies that will help you out when you need it.
