November 6th bowkill

Unread postby G3s » Sun Nov 11, 2018 11:44 am

Climbed into the stand at 5:30 am in a heavy downpour. It was forcasted to rain until about 8:30 am with heavy SW winds all day. I was hunting a really deep, wide holler with a creek in the bottom. I was on the south side of the holler with a really great bench on the other side about 90 yards away. That bench made for the perfect cruising spot trying to wind the head of the draw and the south side of the draw where I was sitting. The way the terrain laid out I was counting on thermals to carry my scent up and away from the bench.

About 12:30 I had a spike chasing a doe around my stand. Soon a little 3 or 4 point joined the chase. He didn't chase long when he suddenly locked up and stared North across the holler. I was looking for whatever caught his attention, it didn't take to long to see that he caught a big boy checking him out from the bench to the North. The bigger buck started walking west so I hit him with a grunt. He stopped and listened for a short bit before he continued on his way. When he was just about out of sight I grunted louder and a touch longer than the first one. He stopped immediately and made some god awful sound that sounded more like a gorilla than a deer. That was all it took he was on his way, he quickly covered the distance and stopped about 8 or 9 yards short of my tree leaving me with a clear shot. I took quick aim and let the arrow fly. He booked for the bottom to try and get back to where he came from. But it was to late. He made it about 40 yards and lay still in the creek.

My trip began on Saturday in Ohio. I sat daylight to dark Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. Tuesday was my lucky day. A beautiful 4.5 year old Ohio stud was mine. Getting him out of that holler was one heck of a task. One way out and that was up the whole way. The terrain is like a mix of 2 terrains. The big hills of SE Minnesota and the heavy thick brush of Iowa creek bottoms. It is no wonder the deer get so big down there!
