1st tradbow Kill!
Well I was able to shoot a mature doe at 12 yards with my recurve on 10/30/18. Got off work a little later than hoped but got Set up in a spot expecting buck travel from a known bedding area. After about 30 min in the tree heard deer running toward me from downwind. They came through a CRP field and into the woods behind me. I’m guessing pushed by other hunters accessing the area over there. Two does came in and stopped 5 yards from me on the right. I waited for a minute for them to calm down and they moved slowly from my right shoulder to a quartering away shot. I drew, anchored, stared at my spot ( on the bigger doe) and let er rip. Hit was farther back than I hoped. She was walking I didn’t lead enough. But I saw the arrow still in her as she ran full bore!
Pretty pumped! I sat down and listened for them to stop running. Heard it calm down Accross a creek. Slowly climdeb down and checked for blood! Had a great blood trail I could see 20 yards ahead. Blood on both sides on the trees and brush and spray on her left side everywhere she jumped. I decided to take my stand and stix down and start the trail. Dark was setting in and I followed the trail down a steep ravine, through a creek and back up the other side. Started to go through a briar patch and ended up in a briar/crp area 150 yards. Had great blood the whole way. Arrow had full penetration but not complete pass thru. Clipped the artery that runs under the spine. (Lucky?) yes. But sharp broadheads make a difference. Single bevel shaving sharp. I feel saved my bad shot.
First animal I have ever shot at with my recurve and what a rush! Hopefully, I learned something and make a better shot next time in the moment! But for now I will enjoy the spoils of organic protein from a traditional kill!
Oh and the drag out was bi$#%. Thick primary and steep hills. LOL. But the pain felt so goooood!
