The Grind Is Over - WI Gun Tag Ripped
It's been a grind, it really has. Although, sometimes I wonder if I'd enjoy it as much if it weren't. I was fortunate to rip my Wisconsin bow tag on a great buck just days before the gun season kicked off in mid-November, and looked forward to the gun season. In Wisconsin, the regular firearms season is 9-days long and the use of pistols, shotguns, rifles, and muzzleloaders are all legal options so long as you are within the boundaries of the law with respect to calibers and gauges. In fact, you can even hunt deer with a "lesser" weapon to fill a gun tag, but you cannot use a "greater" weapon to fill an archery tag. Following the regular gun season is muzzleloader season, and if you're fortunate to hunt in a metro zone you can continue to hunt with your shotgun during the same timeframe as the muzzy season. While I do have a lease in the central part of the state, I don't have the time to make the drive as often as I'd like. So, for the last couple of weeks I've been chasing hard with my bow in hand hunting in areas where firearms are restricted, but archery tackle is permitted. With just two days of gun season remaining, the reality was if it was going to happen then it would have to happen "today" or "tomorrow"; I lucked out and killed this gnarly buck with one more day to spare. Here's how it went down...
I had walked this piece once before, but hunting pressure was heavy on that particular visit and I left without getting very serious. I returned again on the second to last day I would have to rip my gun buck tag and used the high winds to my advantage while sneaking into a hard transition area I had scouted from outer space aerial imagery. I did not know where I'd sit, I just had the area in mind.
The transition was cattail marsh to a slight 15' elevation change that plateau'd to a cut bean field. The gentle slope leading up to the bean field was about a 20-yard wide strip of dense tangled choke cherry and buckthorn. If my assumption was correct, deer would filter out of the marsh in the evening and make their way up to the bean field to feed in the evening.
It was a 20-minute walk in with the 25-30 MPH winds rip-roaring and masking the sound of my steps - I took advantage of that and moved quickly, but slow enough to be aware of my surroundings. When I arrived to the location I had intended to hunt I quickly found a small nest of canary grass with off shoots of tag alders and used that little bit of cover to kneel down and conceal myself. My knees became wet instantly since I was kneeling in soggy marsh, and I looked down to reposition myself. When I looked back up, a large doe was standing 40-yards away wide open with her mouth open and breathing hard. She must have caught movement from my direction, but she couldn't make me out and eventually headed into the thick transition leading up into the bean field. I had a feeling by the way she was acting that a buck may follow, and sure enough, seconds later here he came, nose down and neck stretched out snaking through the cattails. He ran in and the rest is history. A quick hunt for certain, but one not soon forgotten. What a cool buck! Now I can clean my truck and garage, which currently look like I've been living out of each of them over the last few months...

Good job.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.
