Family Farm Quarry Buck
On Friday I headed up to hunt the old family farm with my Dad. I Usually go with him one day during gun season because he loves to hunt there, I have never seen a deer there. We showed up a little late, It was already pretty light out. Two neighbor kids were at the gate so we talked to them. They had already shot 21 deer between the two of them for the year. We didn't have a great feeling after that knowing how hard the farm had been hunted. I headed up to the top of a hill that has an old quarry from the 20's on top. The quarry is the only decent bedding area around that I know of for sure. I saw no deer sign on the way up the hill. I sat Down wind of the quarry looking down the hill. The woods on this property are wide open from alot of over browsing, I could see a long way. I settled in for a long day of nice views and squirrels.
About 8 or so I got a text from my dad that he was going to walk through the quarry to me, and then we were going to go across the highway to the low land section of the farm. About 5 minutes later I saw antlers moving over the top of a big sandstone boulder about 20 yards to my right. I brought my gun up, the Buck cleared the boulder and turned to look at me. Big buck, I was not prepared to see a deer, let alone a "giant". I definitely panicked. Shot way to early, If I waited even 20 more seconds I would have had a much better shot at him. I shot the first time, he turned and ran straight at me, I shot again, and he turned straight away down the hill. I let one more prayer shot off and he was gone.
I immediately got down on myself. I missed a doe the previous Sunday. I get trigger happy with a gun in my hand, rushed the shot. yanked my trigger. I was sure I had missed all three shots. I was pretty down on myself. Waited about an hour, and started looking around. Found a little bit of blood which turned into alot of blood! At this point I was feeling pretty good. Unfortunately, another ten yards and every blood spot also had corn in it. Gutshot. I felt terrible again. I knew the deer was going to die, and probably go a long way. the .308 usually does a fair amount of damage, so we decided just to follow the blood trail to the edge of the pasture and see what it looked like. Right at the pasture we lost blood completely. Decided to back off. M buddy came up from Madison with his dog. and we took up a track a few hours later. The dog has found deer before but is primarily a bird dog, so it took awhile to get her to stop trying to flush pheasants. we looked for 2 more hours, no more blood, no fresh tracks. was about to hang it up for the day and come back the next looking for crows. I was feeling pretty bummed again. My friend said lets check down this fence line one last time. The fence runs along the base of a small ridge, he walked the base of it and I walked the top. I had gone just about as far as I was going to go, I got a phone call from jesse saying he found him! What a roller coaster of emotions.
I cant explain how much this buck means to my dad and I. It was a great experiance and Im glad I was hunting with him when it happened. Unforgettable. Never would have found him with out my friend Jessie's Help. I had told myself I would never shoulder mount a gun deer, but this one is already at the taxidermist. Every tine is exactly the same length, one of the brows is half inch longer than the other. The most beautiful deer i've had the pleasure of seeing in the woods.
