My Kansas Tip

Unread postby Basinboy » Sun Nov 26, 2017 1:01 am

Every year now for at least the last nine years I make the 15 hour drive to hunt a small farm of a friend who graciously allows me to do so. I try to hold out for something special but I sometimes fall for the “I’m not eating this tag” the closer it gets to going home time lol
I held strong even though when I’d send short videos from my phone to my friends of the Bucks I’d let walk by were screaming “SHOOT”! I saw a truckload of nice 2-1/2 year olds and a couple of 3-1/2’s that just weren’t what I was looking to tag. I did see two that I would have loved to wrapped my tag on. The first one came into the bedding area my second day there and starting bumping the 6 does that were bedded. I instantly grabbed my bow and turned my primos does estrus can over twice. He made a loop then headed my way on a trail that I had watched a few deer travel that was 22 yards away and obscured by two branches but if I leaned out on my safety line I could shoot to it. He was coming in Hot and when he got to that hole I baaaaaped and he stopped perfectly broadside! I had my Palmer Longbow drawn and looked at my sight picture and thought shoot which I did, only to watch my arrow hit low, Very low in the elbow knuckle :(
he ran along the creek for about 70 yards, stopped and limped behind some brush and I never saw him after. I waited a couple hours then got down and searched the hit sight with no blood at all. I followed the trail he was on until I found my arrow that had passed through but wasn’t much blood on it. I found where he stopped and there was only two drops of blood about the size of a pencil eraser. I searched the bedding area but I already knew this wasn’t a lethal hit. Bummed but I knew I hadn’t picked a spot behind his shoulder in the excitement of it all. He was a Huge 8 with 12-13” G2’s and G3’s . I continued to hunt from dark to dark everyday a total of 7 of the 10 days I was there! Only saw one other buck that would Trip my trigger but he wasn’t to come in range of the Longbow. The last morning I said I would shoot a doe if given the opportunity and this young doe came in and stopped broadside at 15 yards. Double Lunged and she hopped to 25 yards and tipped over! God Bless everyone have a safe season!

High risk=high reward. Using a longbow certainly limits your shooting range, but I bet when it does all come together, the feeling is just awesome. Sounds like a fun hunt except the wounded buck part.
