5 Minutes for 9 Points

Unread postby <DK> » Mon Nov 20, 2017 10:12 am

Im finally getting around to throwing this together, have been too sick and busy to get it done.

Opening Day of rifle here in MO, I missed a clean 10 at deer camp. Wasnt sure why or what happened but it sure made this shot feel even better.

*11/15/17 - 50* - Sunny - ESE switch to WNW

This was my first day off from work of 5 total and was planned to be a late morning start. Had father duties but luckily it was lightly raining until it was time to hunt.

With the midday wind switch, the plan was hold up close to the barn and maybe something will happen. I thought id be sly and try a new entry route. I stayed on the very edge of the property all the way to farm house. At this point, run into 5+ AmerenUE trucks all talking at the barn... I waved and adjusted the plan. Went to the very back of the property to keep things safe. Decided might as well just pull a cam, then hunt.

At this point I wasnt happy w the situation... I had a target buck running around and really wanted to wait until the weekend - which was bringing perfect conditions - to dive in the right spots... I also planned to ground hunt so at this point was really upset about not having my stand. Well here we are!...

I grabbed a cam card, tried being stealthy but bumped a few does... So I kept checking the wind, found a deadfall, made a spot and scanned around the area. Only to find myself feeling un confident and un happy. BUT the wind said its good. Before sitting down I strolled over to a null to check my view in the direction the buck has a route. Thought hard about adjusting my spot but decided to stop messing around and just sit.

No sooner than my skinny but hit the seat, here comes a nice young buck just barreling right at me! I clicked the safety off and got the scope on him. He stopped in the exact spot on that null where I was checking my view! I did not hesitate. Put a perfect shot on him at 7 yards and he dropped! I put another one in him bc he was moving alot, I missed a week before and it just plain felt good. :D Its the year of the 9 pointers for me!

Hes a young buck w a great set of antlers! His neck was still bit skinny, tarsals just brown. Not a real rutted out buck whatsoever so his size impresses me. Definitely not one of the bigger bucks I could have a chance at but I couldnt prey for a better scenario!

I feel extremely thankful to take this buck and couldnt be happier to share w the BEAST!!! Even more so bc no sooner than when I got home started feeling really sick w the stomach bug and it stayed that way for 24+ hours. If I hadnt shot this buck - my best spot would have been ruined w sickness, would have had to walk out being sick and I would have wasted minimum of 2 days off work.

This really plays into my beliefs that everything happens for a reason out there. My first beast season the wife was pregnant and I tagged out both opening days of archery/rifle. Last year I really struggled w misses and wounded deer. This year shes in school and im Mr. Mom 6 days a week, yet iv been able to reap the fruits of my scouting to the fullest.
