Little Assasin's split beam buck
First of all I just want to thank my kid for dealing with a dad that's extreme and bonkers about whitetails and everything that comes with it. I'm anal and I have a very strict regime and way I do things. She's totally on board, but as a young woman learning what not to do and what to do, it's been trying. Couple that with public land pressure, school; work, a bad car accident, it's made for an eventful hunting season let alone year.
I have been watching an area and monitoring the pressure and how the deer are using it and kind of sitting low impact stands that could have potential, but let me see what I feel I need to see before going ham and tipping the shooters off that we are pursuing. I've been seeing 20-30 does a sit and watching how they move through this area. I finally decided this weekend to take her out and let her fill her tag, only rules where can't be a young deer. First night in we had a dandy 8 working to us and a few does came into view and it was off to the races and gone was that buck. Then two young bucks, came by and she had to pass those. Doe after doe feed by and she said I've never seen so many deer dad. But I assured her that's a good thing right now.
Next morning she's excited gets up, and she's pushing me to get going. We slip in, and get set up, first daylight we can hear a deep grunt and see a nice buck chasing some does. He heads across out of range and heads over to my brother. A little while later I hear some movement in the redbrush thickets behind us. I told lex slowly stand and get your crossbow ready. He steps into view and walks the brush line down and is just out of her range, 35 yards is what she can shoot accurately. I mouth grunt twice, and I'm not sure if it's what turned him but he comes out way, works a scrape and stands there racking his antlers on the overhanging limbs. His neck is shaking, and I know this deer, we call him Bubba because he's a bully buck and we know he's minimum 3.5 possibly 4.5, I tell lex get ready when he clears this branch I'll stop him. He comes into 12 yards and I softly bleat at him. He stops dead in his tracks, lex fires off a shot, bolt hits him right in the crease and he lets out that lovely urggh. He tears off spewing blood. She's pumped, I'm pumped! She's fist bumping me and I get a call from my brother down the way. Said he heard some branches breaking and stood for a shot, and out comes this buck barreling at him. Said he drew his bow and just as he was getting ready to stop him at 40 yards, he takes a nose dive and all is still. He knew who shot him. Was a great way to share the hunt and memories. Lex was all smiles until I reminded her of the 25 minute walk in, which would not be 25 mins coming out with him. Really has been a wonderful year for me personally, seeing those around me start arrowing their biggest bucks to date, and the memories, just priceless. Think I'm creating competition for myself.

Congrats to your daughter WA! Pretty special day in the woods. The hunters you've been setting up are spoiled

How did you do in WI? I haven’t seen anything posted. Maybe I missed it.

I was there for a week, saw some good bucks, lots of smaller ones, and had two big ones come in but just not light enough to shoot ethically. Will be back, most of my time was spent learning the area and how the deer use it and how others hunt it.
