Indiana 10 11/4/2017
This rut funnel is becoming one of my favorite places to hunt in late October/November. Imagine an 100 yard wide too with steep ravines on both sides. Plays for perfect entry on a south wind with your wind/thermals falling directly down the ravine when the sun drops.
My sons decided not to hunt after the morning was uneventful. It was lightly raining, and the warm comforts of home kept my 15 and 9 year old at home. Left the house around 2, and got set by 245 or so.
The evening was very quiet. I had not seen anything other than squirrels when my phone rang. It was my 9 year old whispering, “Dad-have you seen any ?” At about the same time, I hear a snap...different than the 1000 little snaps from squirrels before so I told him I had to go.
I caught legs and body under the canopy 60 yards or so to my east. Then I caught another body moving the same way. I figured it was probably does so I tipped my can over. Both stopped, but then they continued heading away from me. I grunted a few times, and their direvtion changed course. I see the first one and see tiny antlers-a young tiny 6. Hes making his way to me when I see his pal-a much taller and wider 10 pointer.
They both work their way right to me, but theyve both managed to take the only sliver of ground begore falling off the ridge to get behind my tree. The 6 passes without getting spooked, but I figured the 10s nose wouldnt have the same result. I prepared for the shot, and waited till he passed a few trees exposing his front shoulder. I knew he was quartering to me, but I knew I could hit his shoulder back a bit and try to kill him. At 18 yards, I hit him. Immediate mule kick and down the ravine he went at mach 3.
I gathered my gear after a few minutes and slowly started packing up. I went to the arrow, and it was covered from tip to fletching with guts. I started to panic, but I knew I had to give him some time. I was hoping a lung, liver, and paunch all together, but blood wasnt telling me everything to start. I backed out.
4 hours later I took my boys and my buddy back in. After a few hundred yards and good blood from my G5 T3s as always, he was dead in his first bed. Indeed, one lung, liver, and guts. The angle was awful...lesson learned, but he was dead. Now, to beat the approaching thunderstorm getting him out. As you can imagine, down a ravine means back up if its your only way out on the property!
Back at the house around 230/245, and super happy!
