First Buck, Michigan Public

Unread postby whitetailassasin » Tue Oct 10, 2017 1:44 am

Normally I wouldn't write up a kill thread on this kinda of subject, someone elses kill I know, but I played just as much a part in the kill, as the hunter shooting the arrow. So with that being said, I want to share with you all, how and what influenced me in setting him up where I did and why. It was a SSW wind blowing NNE and in this particular area, it's not really a good wind for most of the mature buck bedding I hunt here. So I was replaying some prior hunts, and deer I saw last year, and driving around looking at the pressure and the crop fields that have been harvested and the ones that have been disc'd up. I was checking tracks on the road leading in to bedding and looking at runways in the ditches trying to gather some intel, when I slowly drove by this overlooked spot that has held good deer in before, but it's almost rotational. Some years it gets pounded and some years no one hunts it. It's not very big in size, but it's so thick in there you can't get in there without busting deer out. The only real good way to hunt it is to come off this back ridge and hunt the transition going in. When I was slowly driving by, something caught my eye and I stopped the car and went to investigate. It was a fresh rub leading to bedding that was waist to chest high and fresh. Which prompted me to take a walk back to the ridge, which showed a whole line of rubs leading in and out. Fresh big tracks going in. I set him up at this location. At 6:30 two 8s came out and waked by him at 15 yards, he took the bigger of the two, and through a tough track job, potential rain(that 5 mins after we found deer came down), my buddy had taken his first buck and a very good one for Michigan public. Crazy thing is, he was fist pumping and texting and celebrating, even 15 mins later, that he didn't realize he had an hour left to hunt, and an an even bigger buck came but picked him in the tree acting all excited and high tailed it back into bedding. Now, let me also state, I did see last year three bucks standing in the private field adjacent to this bedding that two of them were close to 100", once again for Michigan that's very respectable, but the one was a solid 140'. My buddy can't score deer yet but he said the buck that caught him dwarfed his buck. And his buck is 15.5' inside spread, 7 inch tines, prob 80-85' a definite 2.5 year old, but not the guy I see leaving the thigh diameter sized rubs chest to waist high. But nonetheless I was super happy for my buddy, and he kept thanking me, no need, that's what friends do. This year has been a year in which I haven't been concerned with myself as much as I have with others. I figure my time will come, and for now, it's way more rewarding seeing others score and face light up. He's getting it mounted, his dad's early Christmas present to him. Something I know he will remember.
