Swamp Stew

Unread postby PK_ » Sat Jan 21, 2017 2:27 am

Got out last weekend. Not too much of a story on this guy. Was just picking my way through a new area that always looked good on map. The wind was giving me fits when I got into the spot I liked. Set up as best I could for the evening. Some fresh scrapes in this funnel near bedding. About 5:15pm I turned around and he was 50 yards headed to me.

Actually had a second buck coming walking right in to me while I was dragging this one out. He had a taller rack but not enough points to be legal. He was limping bad and came from the direction of a shot a few minutes before. Had to wave him off and watch him struggle to run away. Looked like shot clipped both legs. Shame.

Cold flowing creek to cool him down before the long drag out.

Pretty sure this deer was old. Only glanced at his jaw from a few feet away when they pulled it and the teeth looked dished out, but not certain. I did notice the biologist did a double take when he picked it up off the ground. I wanted to take a closer look but didn't want to hold up the check station as there was a line of bucks waiting to get checked out. I will check his teeth when I dig his head up in the spring.

Thx man. Actually it is just a shotgun shell holder but works perfect. I got it at one of the box stores. Been using it 3 or 4 years now with no issues. Actually would be lost muzz hunting without it now. I used to hate digging through my pack looking for reloads. My gun is older and requires one of those little tools to get the primer on/off and it holds that as well if you wrap some duct tape around it so it fills out the holder and stays snug.
