2016 Public Mtn Buck "Rake"
Haven't been on much lately, been busy hunting and scouting. But man, you guys have been killing it. Nice bucks!!!!
I killed this buck "Rake" on Nov 28. It was opening day of our rifle here in PA. But I am persistent and decided to take my bow (After not tagging one during our archery season). I was positioned right off the crest at the top of the mountain.
The hike in was just under 2 miles. I got setup about 45 minutes before first light. He was the first deer of the day on this route. At around 10:40 he came down the trail that cut through the rocks. He was checking his backtrail and looked nervous. He started trotting and cut off the trail pretty fast, graciously stopping 10ft from my tree. The angle was less than desirable but if I let him walk no way I would get another shot. The arrow hit some arteries, lung, and stomach. After the shot he ran down the mountain like a freight train.
After giving him about 45 minutes I took up the blood trail. He bled pretty heavy at times and then it turned to specs every 10 ft or so.
I was a bit nervous when I found a bed and he wasn't in it. Thankfully he didn't go too much further. I gave it 20 minutes before I started up again....going real slow and quiet. I found him about 200 yds away. I did hear him thrashing around about 15 minutes before I found him and figured that he was trying to get up or finally lost the battle. He obviously lost that battle.
For those interested he scored about 115" as a 9 pt, with his original 10 pt rack he would've been 124" or so.
I believe he is a 4 yr old buck. I had 1 sequence of footage last year in mid Oct during the morning and multiple instances this year. All the footage was within 1.27 miles of mountain and was from mid August to November. During the season I caught him once early Oct during shooting light. Mid Oct early morning in the dark. Mid Nov during shooting light. And finally this past Monday close to mid day. He had a full rack in mid Oct and I would have loved to see the fight that broke it off.
I try to implement as many "beast tactics" as I can and can say without a doubt the info on this site has made me a better hunter, hands down. Thanks everyone, you all had a helping hand in the kill of this buck!!!
