Wisconsin Giant Typical
This season has been one for the ages. I killed a wide 8-point with my bow in mid-October and my wife made a perfect shot on a massed out 10-pointer on the opening day of Wisconsin's regular nine day firearms season with her shotgun.
My alarm sounded at 3:00 AM on Thanksgiving morning and I rolled over to text good friend, Matt Hasel, "I'm up!". I would leave the house forty minutes later and drive an hour west to meet up with Matt at his dairy farm in Jefferson County. He was finishing up his morning chores, feeding the calves and treating others when I got there, but he had that familiar smirk on his face as though he had a premonition about the events that would unfold later that morning.
It's rare that someone takes me hunting, usually it's the other way around, or I'm on my own completely. Matt had done the leg work for this hunt, however, seeking permission from a family friend, Jesse Topel, to access Jesse's land for the two of us to hunt and film this very morning. After receiving the go-ahead from Jesse, Matt had gone out the day before our hunt to hang a set in the rain.
First light began to peak in the east with winds out of the northwest. We were perched thirty feet high in an old hickory tree on crooked stands, but the view was expansive over tall CRP grass with young cedar trees all around and a big swamp edge just 150-yards to the east.
Legal shooting time had just begun when we saw the first group of deer, three doe and a 135-class ten point hot on their track. Matt got on the buck with the camera but I couldn't find him in my scope. When I finally found him, the camera focus blurred from the hickory branches and I held off from shooting, but my safety was off. Eventually Matt found him back again with the camera, but by then I had lost him in the scope in the same way Matt had lost him seconds before with the camera. Before you knew it, the buck dogged those doe up a ridge and disappeared for the remainder of the morning.
We sat there bumming for a while, but a constant flow of doe coming and going kept our minds occupied before that magic hour when the typical framed monarch made his grand appearance.
"Let's give it five more minutes", I suggested to Matt, who was running camera.
It had been a few long hours since the excitement earlier that morning and we were both thinking about getting back to our families for Thanksgiving festivities. We began to discuss plans for a second hunt the following day, knowing we couldn't return to where we sat on this particular morning because the landowner, Jesse, would be pulling cedar trees out to eventually turn the set-aside are into a cattle pasture for his cattle farm.
I began to turn towards Matt and give him the green light to start packing up after the five minutes was up when movement caught my eye to the southeast. Here he came, this beautiful buck with a wide spread and tines reaching for the sky.
"Here he comes, Matt! Big buck. BIG BUCK!" I whispered, meanwhile, Matt worked to get the camera trained on the buck as he closed the distance on a trot.
"You on him?" I asked, my scope trained on the animal who was now dead down wind at 220-yards and stopped in his tracks - he could smell us.
"I'm on him." Matt replied.
With that I let the rifle bark, the buck dropping in his tracks.
I'm forever grateful of Matt Hasel arranging for me to come try out a change of scenery and spending his Thanksgiving morning in a tree filming my hunt, and the Topel family for granting permission for me to blow the dust off the rifle my Dad gave me when I graduated college. Just humbled by it all, what a great bunch! A couple bottles of spirits will be hand delivered to those gentlemen soon!

Re: Wisconsin Giant Typical
Thank you, Curtis.
You bet, I hunted with Jared in Minnesota again this season, filming for the next Whitetail Adrenaline DVD. We had some awesome encounters from the ground, but I came home with a dirty arrow and a dull broadhead. Nevertheless, the highlights of that hunt and some of the encounters should make the cut for the next DVD.
How has your season been going? Looked like you had a successful opener of the firearms season with family!
