Awesome story and cool buck. I feel you on enjoying taking your elders out. Papa is 86 I believe and still wants to get out so bad. We bend over backward to make it happen and we love doing it. I'm not even an actual family member (although I consider them grandparents and they consider me a grandson). The old timer still has it. he managed to kill a young buck this year and I can say I hope I am still smoking deer at 86.

Re: Crazi's public land gun buck 11/26/2016
Thanks for the kind words everyone. Mumma usually sits and I push deer to her, and at the same time scouting for the next year's bow season. Doing one man pushes has worked many times the last couple of seasons with us, but she isn't as good as a shot as she once was. But she has fun slinging bullets when she can.
She had many close encounters the last few seasons but no deal sealed.
A funny thing happened on opening day of gun season few weeks ago. I was sitting next to her in a thick pine grove that morning just chatting like we do. We were facing away from each other and scanning for deer while chatting. I look over my shoulder and she has her gun up.
Right away I thought she was just making sure her scope wasn't fogged up or something. I ask her, whats up. I look down range and there stood a real nice wide buck about 30 yards away broadside. She pulled the trigger and all that happened was 'click'.
She has a brand new 30-30 lever action and the dumb thing comes with a safety switch that blocks the hammer hitting the firing pin when the safety is engaged. She is used to the old school 30-30's. The type that meant the weapon is on safe when the hammer is half-cocked.
Anyways, the buck got outta there fast and didn't stop for another chance. Mum was peed off but I was smiling, cuz I thought she would have another chance at one sometime during the 9 day season and this encounter would get her fired up to hunt more.
She did get out a few more times, however, she never got another chance for a shot this season.
I really want to tell her that her chances of a kill will increase if she could climb over some of those ridges, but I know she isn't able to. I do my best to be optimistic when she stops and says, "this looks like a good spot", when I know its probably not going to be productive at all.
But you never know. People get lucky all the time. I will lay my cards down based on that logic. And if she believes in a spot then let her try it.
Before I killed that buck last Saturday, all I could think is, mum can sure use some good meat in the freezer this year. I have passed on so many deer on our hunts because I really wanted her to shoot them instead of me.
I had a feeling my parent's freezer was going empty this year and it kinda hurt thinking about that.
My step-father fell very ill last spring and spent some time in the hospital. He now has COPD from years of smoking and a tumor on his heart that he never knew about.
They are in serious medical debt just from that episode and things are tight. But, their spirits are up and they know its not the end of the world.
Thanks for taking the time to read...
