One heck of a week!!
7 days ago I had my hands wrapped around my best buck to date. Little did I know a week later I would be telling a story about my best Michigan buck.
Today being the opener of the Michigans rifle season I found myself at work all day trying not to think about how I was missing opening day. Which that was the price I had to pay for taking last week off for my Ohio trip.
Any how I managed to sneak out of work early and make it home with just enough time to get setup for the last couple hours. I was hunting at home today. It is very nice being able to walk out my back door and be in the woods.
My wife and I recently purchased a home with 30 acres of property that is completely wooded from my grandfather. That is what makes this story even more special to me.
Anyway, I knew that I had a couple good bucks roaming around from seeing them in the neighboring Ag fields. One especially caught my eye a couple weeks ago on my way to work one morning. So I haven't been putting any pressure on our property at all knowing that every neighbor is going to have be out getting ready for the opener.
So I checked the wind and it was perfect for the setup I was planning on setting tonight. We had a light Southwest wind today. I was setup on the east end of a big thicket that holds doe bedding. And just to the north of me I suspected another doe bedding area on the neighbors property, just based on how thick it looks.
So I was all set up and ready for action by 4:15. Checked the wind, still good. About a half hour later I can hear foot steps in the distance getting louder. He was coming from the north east walking up wind. Scent check the doe bedding I suspect. Finally I can make out a rack, and a good one at that. All I could see was his one side through the brush. I found a hole and waited for him to step in, as soon as he did I touched off the 270. I could tell he was hit good as he took off out of sight. And then the woods went quite again.
I text my wife and told her the news. I took down my stand and waited for her to finish up her hunt on the other side of the property, and together we took up the track. He ran about 100 yds and piled up. Here he is my best Michigan buck. Thanks for reading.
