Bump and Dump Gun Buck

Unread postby Redman232 » Tue Nov 15, 2016 8:23 am

This one was pretty simple. The farmer told me they jumped a good buck off the dam behind a pond maybe 100 yards from the house, when they were running crops. So when I got to the farm I decided to poke around, more for future intel more than anything. I found a bed worn to the dirt and it reeked like buck urine and realized that I probably jumped him out of it when I walked in. From the bed I could see a very well worn exit trail down across an active cow pasture. The bed overlooks right where I park and typically walk in, you would never know he was there. I told my wife who was hunting with me, that I was pretty confident I bumped a buck out of the bed I found. Never saw him or heard him, I just had the feeling that he had been there when I walked in to scout the 1/2 acre ridge. We rushed back to cut him off, assuming he would take his time getting thru the 20 acres of doe bedding before he entered the funnel where I thought we would have a chance. We were literally seated for 90 seconds and I heard him coming. Unfortunately I was between her and him and there was no way for her to get a shot. I let him get broadside at 20 yards and shot. When I got to him the bald spot on his back (I presume from crossing the hot wire fence in the cow pasture) confirmed in my mind we had fooled the buck from the pond dam.ImageImage

It was actually pretty comical, because I heard him trotting from a long ways off. I had a big smile and started to chuckle, the following conversation insued:

Wife: Why are you laughing
Me: He's coming
Wife:Where?
Me:Right from where I said he would be
Wife:How do you know it's a buck
Me:Because little deer and does don't sound like an Abrams trotting thru the woods
Wife:Oh, I see it, it is a buck
Me:Shoot him
Wife:Its big, you should shoot it
Me: Just let him get broad side and shoot him
Wife:I would have to shoot thru you to hit the deer
Me:I know you probably have dreamed of that, but please don't
Wife:Laughing, just shoot him
Me: I can't see him, where is it
Wife:Coming right at you

After being together for the better part of 7 years, it was the first time we had seriously hunted together. As I was getting ready to field dress the deer, I looked over at her and she was smiling form ear to ear. I said most people don't smile at this part. She said "Maybe I should go back and sit down in case another one comes" :D I said sounds like a great idea. She's always appreciated the amount of work I put into each season, but now she really understands what it's all about and I'm very happy we got to share the experience.

Oh and P.S.
I've said it before, but any of you guys who can hunt with Pistol Cartridge Rifles in your states should really look into the 450 bushmaster. I don't gun hunt much but this is the 4th big game animal (1 doe, 2 bucks and 1 big boar) I have shot with it and the round is just a straight up killer. Out of those 4 animals 2 were DRT and the 2 bucks went 50 yards combined.
