The short hunt.
I shot my wi buck on the 16th of October. I knew I didn't want to sit out the November rut, so I started planning a short out of state public land hunt. I started a new job so vacation was not an option. I was going to use my weekend, not the best time to hunt public. I settled on missouri. I threw my truck camper on and headed out right after I was off work. I never seen a deer on 4 hunts. I just kept moving, I ended up covering 4 different counties till I ended up with some action.
I hunted on a leeward ridge that had no signs of being hunted. It started raining and after an hr or so quit. Then all broke loose. Five different bucks were chasing a doe. One of the biggest bucks ran a circle under my tree. I couldn't get him to stop for a shot. The rest of the night I watched these bucks running on the hillside above me. I knew tommorow I needed to be up there.
It was raining as I set my stand in the early morning hrs. I was set almost an hour before daylight. I sat wondering if I was too late, and that hot doe was long gone. Daylight broke and it was quite. The rain had stopped, and it was foggy with rain dripping off the trees. I heard a twig snap , so I stood. I then seen tines ghosting through the woods. The big heavy racked 8 from the day before now stood before me at 20 yds. The shot was true, and in 40 yds he crashed. The woods lay still once again.
