Buck on the run!
Shot this buck on a slice of private land that has one small chunk of woods and the rest fence rows. The only reason the deer use this land is to get from one major wood lot to a river bottom without having to go threw open farm fields. 2 years prior hunted November 7th which was my first time hunting the land. Saw 10 big bucks, but I was in a LW and all the bucks came from the wood lot and were quartering to me. Never took a shot. This year I made sure to have off on the 7th and 8th went further east of the property line closer to the river bottom. big rubs were starting to show up. It was too thick for a stand and so I sat in a blow down on the inside corner of the little chunk of woods that borders cut beans and the edge of the river bottom. Saw my first doe at 3:20, no shot too thick. Next deer was a nice 8 that came from the same direction as the doe, but didnt fallow the same direction she went. I figured she wasnt hot yet. The buck kept going straight I grunted he stopped, then kept walking, I snort weazed and he looked my way but kept on going.
4:20 I hear movement coming from the same direction the other two came from then it like a train rolling threw saw the doe running and the buck chasing and grunting I drew when they were at 20yrds then grunted they kept coming fast I yelled! still coming the doe ran past at 5yrds so did the buck. I had to make a fast decision and thought that thing was so close and swung my bow and fallowed threw like a shotgun .crack! saw a the buck while it was still chasing it appeared to have tuft of hair out of place behind the shoulder.
Texted my buddy " please god tell me I killed that buck.." Did I just shoot at a running deer?! waited 15mins took 5 steps to point of impact found the middle of the arrow ?? thats it no nock no broadhead. I thought I hit a branch, but the end of the middle of the arrow had blood. Went dropped off my stuff at the truck and kind of stumbled on blood on my way back to point of impact. Fallowed it more blood! I was worried it would go over the property line for the land owner that I have permission from is new and has not yet talked to his neighbors. I thought boy that buck was still chasing that doe, who knows how far it went. Welp 70yrds later there he was! dead! I know I got a little lucky and I would have shot at a running buck much further than that.
Last year I wasted a ton of hunts here not knowing the land owner was cutting wood and target shooting when I was gone. I decided then that I would only hunt it during the week of November 7th. Oh and he built a gun tower 2 trees from my original spot. SMH
here he is goofy rack and all:

Re: Buck on the run!
Congrats on the nice buck.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

Nice buck brother. I love it when their antlers do something funky like that left side.
