Hill Country Cruiser

Unread postby JAB » Tue Nov 01, 2016 12:22 pm

I've had a great bow season in the hills. I got a couple of does early and my son shot his first deer (a button buck) with a bow last Sunday morning. With the freezer full it was time to focus on bucks. We hadn't seen very much for bucks yet but knew that if we kept at it and hunted as smart as we could it would happen. Last night I was in stand and on the way in I saw that a scrape line was open and they had recently been hit. I saw a couple of 1.5 year olds and one of them found a hot doe and chased her four laps around me. With a hot doe in the area and a good stand for this mornings predicted winds I knew where I needed to be.

I got settled in in plenty of time and at 7:25 I heard a stick break behind me, I couldn't see back that far but was hoping it was a buck working one of the scrapes. I then heard a large stick break and knew that was the case. I stood and saw a buck working his way towards me. I couldn't see very much of the rack but knew he was a shooter. He passed behind some honeysuckle and I drew, when he passed it I stopped him, settled the pin and shot. I could tell that he was mature and had some good character. I sat back down to gather my thoughts and 30 minutes later took up the trail. It was a short one and he left me a good blood trail to follow. He didn't have any ground shrinkage, after many texts and emails it was time for the work to begin.

It's been a great season! Congratulations to everyone so far and good luck to those still out there!
