Windy Day Buck
It was a windy day this last Friday (10/28), 20-25mph winds. I know most guys hate the windy day, with the tree swaying back and forth, but I've found I've had good luck during windy days. I went out to a spot I have had good luck before seeing bucks. This was my first sit at the spot this year and only my third sit all season. It was nice walking in with the wind covering the crunchy sound of the leaves. I noticed a bunch of trails and rubs on the way to the stand, much more than last year. I took a mental note to be sure to set up on those later in the season. I snuck up the tree and waited. I had a small eight pointer come within 11 yards of my stand. He went to an old tree root that had a hole in it. The hole was holding water, which he stopped for a drink. He was quartering away from me and I took a picture and noted what kind of shot angle would be needed if it was a deer I would want to kill. I watched the small buck move off and down wind of me, but he never spooked since the winds were to strong for him to get a scent. I saw another buck move about 80 yards out but never worked toward me.
Just as I was contemplating leaving the stand early to head to a social gathering, I noticed something out of the corner of my eye. Just as I liked windy days because the buck had less opportunity to see or hear me, I forgot that I also had less of an opportunity to hear and see a buck! Before I knew it a buck worked his way to that same root the younger buck did. I didn't get a chance to see his antlers but I have an itchy trigger finger and thought it would be good enough. I pulled back and let the arrow fly. I heard a thunk and then the buck crashed away. This was the first time I did not get buck fever. I was very relaxed taking the shot and barley had the shakes after the shot. Now, I am the first to say that I am no big buck hunter and do not have much experience with bucks, but I was surprised at how calm I was.
I went down to check for blood and couldn't find the arrow. With it being such a hard quartering shot I decided to leave him overnight. I went back the next morning and found him dead 60 yards away. My shot entered right in front of the left hind leg and exited just behind the right front leg. Perfect shot! He was probably dead within minutes.
I've never had my season cut this short, didn't even make it to the rut. Not sure what to do with myself now! Ha! This was a fun hunt and showed the importance of first time sits and making the most of a sit. Years prior I would have sat that stand at least three times already. Patience is key on bucks. Thanks to everyone on this sight, I've learned a lot and hopefully more bucks will follow!
