A son introducing his father to bowhunting

Unread postby tbunao » Sat Oct 29, 2016 1:21 am

Sometime in July I received a text from my father saying that he had just bought a bow at a yard sale. I wasn't exactly excited that he had purchased one without me there. So many things could be wrong with it and he has no idea what to look for. When I finally got to look at it the first thing I noticed was the draw length is about an inch and a half to long for him. Being a older bow as well I can't adjust the DL with out different cams. He had already shot it a few times and said he liked it. wouldn't you know it he was putting fist size groups at 20 yards already. I said, "well give this year a try and if you like bow hunting then maybe we can go shopping during the off season."

My father signed himself up for the archery course that we have to take in Ny and passed. He continued on shooting every other day heading into the season. I went and purchased him a Summit Viper SD for his birthday present. He was ready to go except for one thing.. He has no idea where to go. He gun hunts but has no idea on how deer naturally move.

After listening to Whitetailassasins podcast I made it a personal goal to get him a shot at a buck. I did a few quick scouts in areas that didn't require a long walk, went over my journal and notes looking for other decent spots with fairly easy access.

Season came and we would talk the night before his day's off, I would suggest areas and he would go. Most of the time he would either bail on the original plan and go to old familiar stomping grounds. "You can lead a horse to water but can't make him drink" (thanks for the quote LD  )

10/26/2016

The night before I had a spot in mind only to change it when the wind following the script. I scouted my way a little farther up a deep cut and ran into a hot looking scrape line. I set up but nothing, so I left the stand to return in the AM.

I quickly ran out of confidence in the spot around 9am after being able to see that the scrapes had already been hit again last night. So I packed up and began to follow it. The scrape line cuts across the NW side of decent sized saddle. I followed all the way up to a location that is a terrain featured funnel. To the right a steep hill side, to the left about a 20ft rise in the hill kind of like a knob. I looked at the topo and realized that I had found beds not to far from the other side of this knob. I quickly backed out and shared a brief texting convo with Deerdylan. I told him I was giving this spot up to my father and was going to get him right then. Then this,

Deerdylan: Yall might be dragging tonight
Me: If he hits the mark, I will be

It was just one of those locations and times that I had all the confidence in the world.

After the cringing hike in with my father (not the stealthiest of walkers) we made it and set up. At 4:50 I heard a quick commotion and glanced to the knob. There stood a young buck stretching. I motioned my father to get up. The buck followed the trail right to our location. When he went behind a tree my father didn't draw. After the hunt he then told me he couldn't draw it back   When the buck was near the end of the shooting lane I blated at him to stop him. Just then the cams rolled over and a good shot was placed. Clipped one lung and the heart had a nice slice in the top.

I began to drag him out with the LW on my back and my father decided to go ahead to drop his stuff off and then comeback and help. A mile later I end up at the truck but no pops.... Great!!! I instantly knew where he went wrong and began the hike back in. He had his head down trying to hurry back and went straight on a logging road where he should of turned. I recovered him and all is well.   8-) The trail he went down has a trail cam I just placed that morning on video mode over a scrape at a 4 corner. I'm not sure I'll have to much buck activity now but I'll have him going by a few times

My fathers first deer with a bow and I was in a tree right next to him. I am so glad he decided to see what I was so passionate about and get into it. I am one proud son.

I think I'm going to get him a gps collar for Christmas
