First deer with compound
Its been a rough season for me. It started out in Delaware where all my gear was stolen while I was out in a marsh. Then on all my encounters there was an equipment failure when it came down to kill time. The glue on my vanes continued to fail on three shots so I switched to a different set of arrows. Then this past weekend my mother had a mild stroke so I came down to my parents place to help her out and left my tree stand in the fiancés trunk. Between my moms condition and the cold snap were having I was itching to get my mind off of things and not having the stand was a bummer but I decided I was going to try to make it happen.
I went out for a walk on the property where they are staying yesterday morning and found an active scrape back on a wooded hillside, proceeded to freshen it( I had a couple cups of coffee that morning lol) and backed out. I went back out at around 3 pm to find the scrape and set up down wind. well when I got back there I couldn't find it so I set up in the area that I thought it was in, but closer to a nasty thick creek bottom and had a perfect north east wind. I found a tree, cleared some leaves away to make a big enough spot so that I could stretch out and sat down. The first action started at four when a doe and four turkeys came through, it was cool to hear the birds talking, first time ive experienced that. It was early so I let her pass. Then at about 5 I had three does come in from about 8 o'clock and decided that I was going to take one. Well to my luck the switched for 5 seconds and one caught my scent and blew and they took off going to my 10 o'clock blowing the whole way. It sucked but what really got me was that I heard something off to my right bound back down into the thick creek bottom. never got to see what it was.
I thought my hunt was over by this time but 15 mins later I caught some movement where the does had been. It was a wide 6 point. I'm guessing a 2.5 year old by the look of his rack. He started rubbing a sapling and doing his thing. I waited until he was behind a tree before I grabbed my bow and stood up. He passed the tree and turned broadside. As soon as I started to pull back, he took off, my heart sank and I believed it just wasn't going to happen for me anytime soon.
Well 10 mins later a little 6 came in and by this time I'm ready to stick anything. I needed to. My confidence was shot. He appeared in the same place as all the other deer. I pulled back and let one fly, SMACK! Finally connected on one. He took off but not far as I heard him crash and seen him shake a sapling at the same time. So I waited 15 mins and walked over to find my arrow. Come to find out there was the scrape. Not 40 yards from where I had set up. It was a short track job as I could see the belly white from the scrape..
Relieved I got him gutted and back to the house. It was a heart shot that did him in.
I don't have a range finder but I'm guessing it was a 40 yard shot. The broad head that I shot him with was one I had used on an earlier hunt in the mountains when I missed an 8 point after a vane came off mid flight, it had broke off one of its blades on impact of a rock so instead of 4 there was 3.

Very nice! and good shooting. All your stuff was stolen in my lovely state. That Sucks. We have our share of scumbags. Were you up north or down south?
