Mature Northern WV stud killed beast style!
He may not have the biggest rack or score much, but this buck is a true trophy to me in this highly pressured area!
I got this buck on cam one time in June and decided to target him since I thought he was an older deer. But as they usually do he vanished!
Fast forward to middle of September. After all summer of running trail cams and moving them I finally found him nearly a mile away from the first picture. But as he did before, no more pics after that!
I figured out there were three bucks bedding on this small point that is choked with big boulders and laurel when the wind was coming from the S-SW. after finding a faint, but fresh rub line coming off that point I knew where I needed to be.
Yesterday afternoon with a perfect SW wind blowing pretty steady at 5-10 mph I made my approach from 1/4 mile out after parking in a creek bottom. I snuck as quietly as I could up the steep hill and onto the bench where I suspected they where traveling. Using my tree saddle and climbing spikes I went up a knarly maple tree and settled in at 30'. My view was limited but I knew if a buck was bedded in there he would come out within range so I waited quietly.
At 6:15 I caught a flicker of movement and pulled up my binos to see a big rack sticking up! The big seven was bedded not 70 yards from me! He stood up, checked the wind, and slowly started feeding my way. I had one opening to shoot through and when he stepped out at 41 yards I had the pin buried and without even thinking the arrow was in it's way. Perfect shot!! He ran about 40 yards and was down within ten seconds!
I can't really explain how excited I was! To kill a buck of this age class, even with a gun, is extremely rare in this area. They just don't make it past 3.5 very often and if they do, they are poached.
Live weight was around 230lbs, giant neck, long thick body. Just a brute!
Have to give a big thanks to all the beast hunters on this sight. After reading threads and learning so much on this site I went into this season more confident than ever and ready to put some new strategies into play. This buck was acting in classic hill country fashion and using what I learned on here I was able to figure out where he was bedded based on wind. I jokingly told my buddies as I went in yesterday that a big one was going to walk right by me never actually thinking it was going to happen! LOL
