Like many of you guys I couldn't wait till season. Here in Arkansas the season opened up on the 24th of September. Previous to yesterday I had a couple sits at some public I frequent and 1 at a place I have permission. It was hot here and calm. I found it extremely hard to be stealthy. This week we got a cold front and I noticed the wind was blowing a lot more than the previous week. The wind was not hard by any means but the 10 mph winds with 15 mph gusts was just what i needed to creep in on a bedded buck. Thursday had the wind direction as well as the increased speed. I suspected the bed was being used based on the acorns and the recent sightings of does in a nearby field well before dark. Here is my set up.
I heard the buck get up after a short sit. He was walking with a slight cross wind to his back right to my mobile stand. He only ran 30 yards. Definatly not my biggest buck but he was health. With meat in the freezer and one more buck tag I can hold out for a stud.
The contributing factors that made the hunt was, the direction and velocity of the wind, the acorns and of course the location of the bed. Without the wind I would have never been able to set up on him.
