First bird in years
Since I've started hunting again 3 years ago I have been on a mission to take a bird with a bow and no blind on public. I've limited opportunities all three years. First year zipped one over a tom, 2nd zipped one over a tom and then was busted on the draw. This year with all the deer scouting I've done I've seen very little sign of turkeys. From my first bird to the last I shot where all toms (6 total) but this year I decided that I would take the first legal bird that presented it's self.
I saw 3 jakes and a hen yesterday working a field edge and with the rain in the forecast I suspected that they may roost near by and fly down to the field. It was really foggy this morning and could hardly see my decoy at 20 yards. About 630 a hen appeared out of the fog and investigated the decoy then carried on her way. It wasn't long before the jakes were looking for her as they must of sounded off right as they hit the field. I gave a couple excited yelps and they responded. Game on!
They appeared about 70 yards out in the field. I could only make out the figures. I gave a couple clucks to let them know where I was. They responded but continued on the way out of my sight behind a large pine. Hoping that they were hooking I gave it a few before I again clucked. They responded again right behind the pine. I could see through the pine as one came to strut and was approaching the decoy. I drew back and waited for him to clear that pine. 21 yard shot to the heart. He ran off in the fog.
I got up to go get the arrow and go to find him when I caught 2 figures in the field jumping about. The other 2 jakes were drop kicking the now expired jake.
It's been a tough 3 years trying to get this done and even though he's a jake I'm thrilled! I'm to hard headed to use a gun and love this challenge. On to tag #2. This time it's only going to be a tom from now on

Congrats! Bow birds are a hard fought battle. Without a blind makes it all that much tougher.

You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.
