Late Season Buck
This is the buck I shot on Dec. 20th. I have a food plot at the back of my property and am able to glass it from a distance. On Weds. the 16th my wife told me she could see at least one nice buck in the plot at around 4 pm. On thurs. I was home from work and was able to glass from a distance and saw what looked like a big 8 and another 8 or 10 point well before dark.
Friday is my first chance to hunt so I decided to sit on the ground about 10 yards from my foodplot. I was very surprised to see a nice 10 point enter the plot at about 3 pm, there were several does with him and one of those does must have caught my movement and they all busted out. At 4 pm more deer showed up along with a nice long tinned 10 point. I had him at 29 yards and was bringing up my bow when again a doe caught my movement and they busted. Very exciting hunting at ground level but also very tough to get a shot off with so many does around.
On sunday the wind was from the south which would allow me to hunt from a tree stand just inside the woods that I had set up before the season. I was confident that the deer that busted me on the previous 2 hunts only saw movement and never got my scent so I didn't think they were to spooked and it being the end of the season I had nothing to lose anyway.
I got into my tree by 2 pm. I had 3 does walk by well before 4 pm. At about 4:15 I hear deer walking and hear comes a nice looking buck. He is coming from the se and trying to get as much of the wind in his favor as possible. Problem for him is there is a pond that he will have to skirt around and he will end up in my shooting lane before he can get downwind of me. He hit my shooting lane at 18 yards giving me a perfect broadside shot. He ran about 50 yards and tipped over. It was a very satisfying end to a sometimes very frustrating season.

Nice buck.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

Re: Late Season Buck
Awesome, congrats... Funny how another guy was telling me the other night that he is not tagged out but has not hunted since the rut because the deer are not moving.
I know these deer were coming to food, but congrats for staying in the game and knocking one down late in the year!
