MO public land rifle

Unread postby Bowhunter4life » Mon Nov 16, 2015 10:30 am

I was a little undecided this year as gun season was approaching. I had been bow hunting a lot in Illinois and really had not even had time to think much about MO rifle season. I had some trail camera pictures of a nice 10 point from this year in that area and would gladly take him if given the chance. In 2014 I had some pictures of a really tall 8 and had actually found a shed from what I figured was the same buck in 2013. The area is a big grown up field with lots of willows and brush scattered through it. There is a big crop field on the north side and wood lots to the east. I had my camera places in the woods last year to the east when I captured a few photos of the big 8. I knew of some decent buck bedding and doe bedding out in the overgrown field. There is never a lot of sign in there as far as buck sign but the woods to the east is torn up most years. Well of course that's where most of the hunters were going to be setting up. It was a long walk back in there almost two miles and I had an idea of the tree I was going to be setting up in but knew I had a lot of work ahead of me. It was a small tree with tons of limbs but it set me up right in the heart of the overgrown field. Went in early as I was the first vehicle in the parking lot on opening day of rifle season. Roughly a hour before daylight I was set up and ready to go. Looking off to the east about 20 or so minutes before light I was seeing several flashlights walking through the woods. This is where I figured the deer would be coming from so I wanted to be set up well before any of the other hunters showed and pushed the deer toward me. The morning started off slow for me but I heard several shots coming from the woods. About a hour or so after first light the action started. Small bucks were chasing does all around me. For well over a hour and half the action never really let up. Only problem was these were all small basketracks and one decent 120 inch 8. I was starting to wonder if I had made the right decision as I just kept on seeing one after another small buck. I was actually looking at a map on my phone when I heard some noise right out in front of me. There was decent 6 point coming through the brush and he kept stopping to look back. That got my attention and I grabbed my gun and ready myself just in case it was a decent buck. Before I ever saw the deer I could see the tips of antlers coming toward me and knowing how tall that stuff is I knew it was a dandy. Once he stepped out I knew right away who he was as I laid the crosshairs behind the front shoulder and pulled the trigger. He hit the ground at the crack of the gun. I'm not much on rifle hunting as my true passion is chasing these animals with a bow but I was pretty excited to have knocked down a deer i set out to kill in the rut. That is often to me one of the hardest times to harvest a specific animal so I felt fortunate to have had that opportunity.
