Legend of Chubs (Part 2)
Summer of 2012... anticipation was high to see what fully mature Chubs would look like at 5yrs of age. He was inching towards the top of my list of bucks I really wanted to focus on. He definetly looked good in my eyes
I started spotting more from a distance trying to find an early season pattern. (which in turn helped me pattern another buck) But, I really still could not come up with anything on this particular buck. Even in the summers... he seemed to spend the majority of his time in the brushy/marsh.
I started to hunt more aggressively in the "thick" sitting in laughable tamarack trees 8-10ft off the ground with minimal back cover.... it did work to get glimpse and a start to understanding how he was using the brush to navigate from doe bedding area to doe bedding area. I started running cameras as well in brush and learned more in 2012 then I had in the previous years combined.
(at this point I was still dabbling with filming hunts)
He won again... but I felt like I gained ground in 2012
The other really good news is that is range seemed to tighten up and shift towards my lease... I believe 2012 was the first year I planted soybeans if I recall
2013 - Could he get bigger?!?!? Now at 6yrs of age... he looked like he was gonna pop he was SO fat
I was seeing him more in the summer in green fields... something had changed. His guard was definetly let down some in 2013 at the age of 6
I changed "death alley" to clover in hopes that I could possibly ambush him back in thick brush before heading out to the bigger ag fields/food plots
My plan worked... but unfortunately I hunted it a few days late
I think I hunted it the 18th of Sept (I saw another nice SUPER tempting 3yr old)
A week later my neighbor sent me a picture that just CRUSHED me...
He had busted up his rack and of course busted off a brow tine like every year previous. I had put A LOT of eggs in the Chubs basket that season and he was finally walking all over in daylight! I could not shoot em busted up at 6.... he made it this long... I pulled off him and hunted Western WI and Southern WI the rest of the season.
I still ran a few cameras... but he ruled the roost and was now living in 40 acres or so of the brush
Another view of his busted rack
His sheds again were scooped up in the spring
Doubt was starting to creep into my mind... would he continue to have a good rack or start to slide down hill??? With all the sheds and pics... he was constantly in the back of my head. I would be in "death alley" early in 2014!
(to be continued)

Your dragging this out. But that's good. It really helps give us the feel of how long you were invested in him.

Very cool, love the chronicle.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

Nice Story Bucky!
Man-o-man that pic with the little buck is dwarfing.
What do you guess his dressed weight at?

This is such a cool story with all the history and time you've put into this deer. I like the different parts. Much better than one long drawn out post.

Lot's of history there. Too bad it had to end like it did but glad you at least found his rack. Are you gonna get another cape and do a shoulder mount?
