First compound deer.
Just a quick story on my son's first compound bow deer . He had taken a few deer with crossbow and muzzleloader already but wanted to start with his compound this year . I told him if he practiced enough after we took it the local bow shop to get him set up correctly, he could start hunting with it . We started him out at 28# in July and little by little tightening those limbs, he was able to pull the Ohio 40# minimum by early September .
We did a few early season hunts on the ground with out a blind and mobile with our Assault stands . After last Saturday's rain , I thought Sunday morning would be a good time to be out on the neighbors farm we have permission . I always set a pop up blind along a field edge where bucks always like to scrape under some small oaks . With the pre rut kicking in I decided to pull out the decoy as this time of year usually gets at least a tough guy reaction from young bucks . I highly recommend this set up for young hunters this time of year . We've had success bringing deer in close and allowing a new hunter a little freedom to move some getting ready to shoot. Not to mention an exciting hunt when a buck gets aggressive.
I get the decoy setup upwind and a little to the right of the blind . It's 11 or 12 yards and facing the way I want a buck to come in for a challenge . We settle in the blind that's been out since August and set our chairs. Right at shooting time Dylan said "Dad I see deer, theres 3 coming this way" . A spike , a basket rack and another young buck were making there way over to the decoy . The spike stayed back and the second buck J hooked to front of the decoy but stayed behind some vines in front of the blind . His ears were pinned back and after few moments he let out a loud snort wheeze 12 yards away . I was loving this , knowing Dylan's heart was pounding out of his chest . The buck took a couple steps forward and stopped in the shooting lane, Dylan had to lean back after drawing because of some rag weed in the way , then let it fly . I couldn't see the hit but it sounded good .
After a half hour we headed out to find blood . Didn't take us long to see a good spray and found his arrow had passed through. A hundred yards or so later ... He did pull his shot and he knew it . Hit back high but got lucky hitting the artery . The DRT broadhead we tried really did the damage ,made some nice holes . I would like to try these with a traditional bow.
I think it's safe to say he's hooked on bowhunting now . Proud of him . Fun to watch them learn out there even on the slow days .

Outstanding E72!!!!
He will be hooked for life!
It's great when a kid sets a goal and works to achieve it (40 lb draw) and then has success. Well done.
