Two Deer Down in the Metro Hunt
This was my first time trying the Twin Cities metro hunt program. Didn't draw a hunt position but made it on the list as an alternate and was able to hunt. As a group we all hung out stands the evening before the hunt, which was very foreign to me, but it was nice walking in Friday morning to a pre hung stand. Saw lots of little bucks Friday, probably 7 different ones. No does, and the first weekend is antlerless. Two deer came in before dark. One was a little fork, and the other appeared to be a button buck. I shot that one, but my arrow hit low and back and I was able to get a second arrow into him. After tracking 60 yards or so, the coordinator and I decided to find him in the morning.
The second morning I saw another 8 pointer, then later two fawns worked in behind me. I shot and initially thought I missed low because they both ran off together tail up. Then the one I hit veered off and crashed. Arrow pierced the center of the heart. After tagging that one and giving the group ample time for a quiet morning hunt, the coordinator and I went and recovered the other deer. All the meat was in good shape minus the tenderloins as one of the arrows had slightly pierced the stomach. Turns out it was actually a yearling buck, not a button, but it's forked antlers were only just over an inch, counting as an antlerless in the books. 130 pounds dressed. Based on everyone's observations, the buck to doe ratio is insane. Maybe 5+ bucks for every doe. The second weekend is mid November and open to buck or antlerless.

Re: Two Deer Down in the Metro Hunt
Congrats on the Deer!
So..... 1st impression of the metro hunt?
I have hunted the tri-county park hunt up at Crow-Hassan several times and enjoyed it more than the Camp Ripley experience; although the trophy potential is very biased up north. (C-H hunt 4 or 5 times, Ripley 6 or 7 times)
It has been announced that the County park hunts are going to be ran by the Metro area Bowhunter club (forget the acronym?) and it sounds very much micro managed to me.
Can you expand on your 1st experience and how you plan to go forward.
It sounds like you had a great day of action, and that is always fun.
How was the coordinator, team members etc..?
Feel free to PM if your reply needs to get colorful!
Thank You

I'll post an answer in the thread a while back about the MBRB hunts.

No they were compound. The proficiency test is only something I could pass on a good day with my longbow, not a bad day. Given the population reducing nature of the hunt and wounded deer penalties, I decided to stick with the precision machine. I'll switch back to the longbow again for the rut.
After the end of the first weekend, the group ended up with 5 deer total, which is on pace for average.
