SW MI public success
Greetings,
This is my first post to the beast site after being a student for close to a year now. I came into the 2015 season ready to apply these newly acquired tactics. I've been a mobile public land hunter for several years now, but once I started studying this site and Dans videos things really clicked in gear and I realized what I haven't been doing right.
This is an awesome site!
So October 1st is here, I plan to spend the first 4 days of the season attacking the local public marsh. Drive in, couldn't belive how many cars lined the road on a Thursday morning. Slipped on to a point where an oak ridge transitions to swamp. Seen 5 does. Spent a couple hours scouting mid day, didn't find anything too exciting so back to back to the morning spot by 2pm. Went another 200 yards up the marsh edge until I found another heavy point of entry into the marsh and set up the lone wolf. Didn't see anthing until about last 15 mins of light. This 8 was headed straight downwind parallel to the marsh. Got to 15 yards and let it fly, hit a little far back, slipped out and found him the next morning.
Hunted 10/3 out of a pop up with my 6 year old, nothing too serious, didn't see any deer.
October 7 woke up with a cold, called in sick to work. Maybe too sick for work but not for hunting. 2pm found myself headed out to a different SGA in a different county from where I shot the first buck. I hadn't been in the spot before but looked great from aerial view. Got in to where I planned to be and someone already had a stand hung there. Backed out and went further up this marsh transition. As luck would have it, I stumbled upon a heavy rub and scrape line that led straight to the marsh. Where the rub line entered was too thick to get a shot if I hung the stand so I hung the lone wolf on the base of a tree and used it for as a seat. Half an hour before dark this 8 came out right where I thought he would and let him have it. Again hit kind of far back slipped out and found him next morning. Found his bed while trailing him, my set up was about 50 yards from his bed!
One week in and I'm out of buck tags. Couldn't be happier except for missing out on the rut this year...
